What about me? Where's my parade? Where? Where?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,514 ✭✭✭Cody montana

Hey, it's another day of celebration and surely this is a good thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

Pride is about a minority standing up against discrimination.

Straight people aren't a minority. I am glad you came to us with this entirely genuine question and that we were able to answer it for you, but I'm not sure it required its own thread.

Lack of oppression makes one lazy?

Because if us straight people went out and had a parade, celebrating the fact we're straight, then we're instant homophobes

Surely straight pride isn't applicable to somebody called Cody?

I'm kinda proud to be straight..but it's a bit ghey to start going on about it.

There's no need. It's that simple.

Tell us more about your feelings on homophobia and the oppression you feel as a straight person.

Indeed, I just thought it would be a bit of fun.

If it did go ahead, I wonder what would it entail?

Straight folk, fully dressed on a float doing the washing?

    What other groups are oppressed?

Bisexual, red head, midget, African Americans with a wooden leg, stutter and lazy eye.

    Poor bastards, where their parade?!

Cody Montana. If that's not a name straight out of Brokeback Mountain, I dunno what is.

Cody, every day is straight pride day.

There can be no doubt that in the lead up to the referendum any straight people on the no side were badly oppressed. That is a fact.

Not really, do foreigners not celebrate St. Patrick's day?

Don't think Bisexuals could organise a parade, what with the copious riding.
Isn't there already a ginger parade?
Midgets, eh, the Wizard of often on the Tv at Christmas....sometimes.
And the last one, can't they combine "Talk like a pirate day" and Martin Luther king day?

Why doesn't such a thing exist?

It does. It goes from Flannery's to Coppers most weekends in Dublin.

But we do have a parade. Everyday we have a parade in every village, town and city in the world. And we parade even more explicitly at night and in nightclubs, bars, teenage discos etc. Everyday life is a celebration of being straight. And no, it doesn't make us homophobes, just as having a specific parade on a specific day wouldn't make us homophobes either. Unless of course you wanted that parade to specifically suggest that being straight is right, and more natural than being gay, or that being gay is unnatural. In that case, yes, we would be homophobes. The internet is hard work today.

But being straight is more natural.

At least, depending on what definition of natural you're using.

You might get away with it in American cities, but if you tried to have a straight parade in a city as winding as Cork or Dublin, you'd get stuck at the first corner.

    Straight white male represent.

Imagine if the high horse band found out about a white and straight pride parade. They'd trip over themselves to condemn it.

That which occurs in nature. Therefore, straight and gay are both entirely and equally natural. What on Earth is "more natural" even supposed to mean? Are gays half-natural and half-engineered by scientists?

Also: I'm loving the amount of passive-aggressive people who sound like they'd love to be making homophobic comments and are very angry the world has moved on to the point where they know they can't get away with it.
