Vat registration

I'm looking for some quick advice about vat invoicing. I've applied for vat registration, they said it will take about three weeks. I've asked to have it back dated to cover purchases I'm making this week and revenue told me it will be back dated to start of this period, i.e. start of May. While I know I will be able to claim back vat on my purchases, am I supposed to be adding vat to the invoices I'm sending out for May/June period? Can I do this if my registration is pending?

So I spoke with Revenue this morning who said I can't issue any invoices for the next four to five weeks until registration comes through. Great news for my cash flow.

Nothing to stop you issuing a "Pro Forma" invoice as a request for payment of amount (inclusive of potential VAT) and following up with a VAT invoice when reg number confirmed including a breakdown of VAT for customer(s).

Yeah, thanks for that. Spoke to my accountant earlier this evening who said to issue a pro forma invoice then come back with a full invoice once registered.
