House martins

I've been watching house martins nest building on a gable wall in a house where I pass on my walks on a daily basis. Not sure if they had managed to lay eggs yet, but this morning both nests were gone ! Sad to see the martins flying Into the eve as if looking for their nest ! Couldn't be certain whether the nests fell or were destroyed but more likely the latter, given that both nests are gone !

Some people are utter c****. Destroying house martin nests makes me despair.

It's also illegal isn't it? House Martins are not classified as vermin.

The Irish mentality, no room for wildlife. The Country only knows greed.

I wouldn't be so sure that most people realise that, as is the case with most bird species, House Martins are protected under wildlife legislation and destruction of their nests is also illegal. It's more about over zealousness in keeping paintwork and footpaths clean rather than deliberate acts of vandalism I'd say ? Either way,, while in no way excusing the mindless and heartless action, maybe a public awareness campaign about the protected status of birds and their nests would help a bit ?
