    You need a PSV Licence?

What is a Private Hire Licence? Am i right to assume its like the older Hackney Licences?

    Hi mate,
In Uk there is Private Hire and Hackney Licence..
Im taking it by your comment its just a Hackney here In I.E?

Im so shocked at the Hackney cost E6,500 if Im correct...
Thats why I was wondering if there was a cheaper way to just get started.

The equivalent in Ireland to your private hire licence is a Hackney licence, these are no longer available. The only option left to you as a new entrant to the Taxi business is to get a taxi plate costing €6300. You'll also need to get a drivers psv licence €250 + the examination fee. The exam is fairly difficult.

To save on 6300 could you rent all inclusive Plate ect....just to get started?

You have to rent the vehicle. Its not permitted to rent the plate only.

    https://www.nationaltransport.ie/taxi-and-bus-licensing/taxi/operating-an-spsv/responsibilities-of-an-spsv-vehicle-licence-holder/
The regulations permit a vehicle licence holder to rent the vehicle to another person. The person providing the rental must own the vehicle and be the holder of the vehicle licence, and must provide appropriate insurance for the period of the rental. The rental of an SPSV licence only (without the vehicle) is not permitted.

You will need to pass the relevant area and business knowledge exams to obtain a drivers SPSV licence first, then after you have passed that you can drive a taxi, hackney or limousine, but not before.

After obtaining your SPSV drivers license you can then rent or buy a taxi, hackney or limousine, as at the moment the sale of normal taxi plates is on a hold you are limited to purchasing either a limousine plate or a wheelchair accessible vehicle license.

You can get further details from the NTA at https://www.nationaltransport.ie/taxi-and-bus-licensing/taxi/new-to-the-business/ or by ringing them 01 879 8300

    Real appreciate your info...
Its daunting in a new country.
was going to head for Galway seeing as Im not to far away for a Self employed Taxi job.
The plates are on hold? why is this?
I have seen complete taxi cars with Plates on line was thinking just to get the complete package...
I only have so much money to last me and am terrified of making a mistake...
    lol..s.o.s
    cheers Spook

Lots of historical reasons for the hold on saloon licenses, including the need to actually increase the number of wheelchair accessible vehicles, at present something like 2% of the entire fleet.

You will need to sit the exam for Galway and it's surrounding area, no easy task if you've just/recently arrived :(

You need to get a psv drivers licence before you can do anything. As Spook said, not an easy task.
