Hi, I am looking into doing a 3 day retreat in lough derg. I am wondering is there Vodafone mobile coverage on the island. I know that this island is a special place and not a holiday, it's just that I am wondering about keeping in contact with home as a family member is not well.

Also I would love to hear from people who have done this priligrim with any tips and advice about clothing etc to bring

    Thank you

Thanks hoagy, I read that alright, I am now thinking this year is not the right year for me to go. I am not addicted to phone/laptop etc but I would be anxious to know that I could be contactable easily for the next while. It's something I will forward to doing in the future.

If there was an emergency people would call the centre. No point going with a phone.

Sounds like a stupid question, but how do you know what to do there? By that I mean, there seems to be a lot of prayers and things that you have to do in a certain order.

I'd need some sort of dummies guide that would tell me what to do and when etc :)

They give you a dummies guide. Plus you are not doing it alone; there are a bunch of people doing it, many of whom are regulars, and they will be happy to give you a steer.

I don't think three days is a particularly long time to go without a mobile phone..?

Would you consider the one-day retreat, even as a toe in the water?

It's called a one-day retreat, but in fact it's only about seven hours.

it's not even 3 whole days, since you leave the place about 10am on the 3rd day. seriously OP, not having a mobile phone for a short space of time can be a relief.

Hi, I went to lough derg this year, the phone coverage is poor. However there is a reception that takes calls and will get a message in an emergency. Also you are only 5 mins from the mainland.

It was very cold, so take lots of layers. I didn't mind the no eating/No sleeping for 24 hours.
I felt great the week after.

Like banging your head off the wall. It feels great when you stop.

Ah I think that's really unfair. Some people get great comfort and joy from doing retreats like this, or a yoga weekend, or a big night out. If it doesn't affect you and it isn't costing you any money, why sneer at what other people enjoy? There's heaps of activities I would run a mile from, retreats of this nature being one of them, but no need to be mean about it for those who have gotten something out of them.

But sneering scoffing and scorning is the only way idiots can feel superior so we just leave them at it, sure God help them

Not sneering just making the observation. There's a great movie on Netflix called Hector and the Search for Happiness. Among many of the truths within it is the observation that if you avoid all pain and unhappiness, you cannot achieve real happiness and contentment. Banging your head off the wall is admittedly a bit extreme though.

I went to Lough Derg with a Friend who asked me if I wanted to go. I was no way religious then. I didn't get the who endless kneeling/ Millions of rosaries. (at that time) However I did like the place, there was an amazing the peace.. no mobiles. a spectacular place. I lost 10 pounds!!!!. (who needs weight watchers!!).

Went to confession after .. well the last time was before first communion .

Don't knock it unless you have been there.
