Front wheel is loose after cleaning

Hi All

I was cleaning my bike this evening. I took off both front and back wheels, gave everything a thorough clean. After re-assembling the bike everything seemed fine except for the front wheel which did not return to its original feel. I inspected the wheel closely and however fast I tightened the front quick release, the wheel remained loose. What I mean by loose is that it would have lateral movement when pushed - almost hitting the break pads. In comparison to the back wheel which was firmly rotating as it should, the front wheel seemed to be missing a screw! I took off the front wheel a couple of times and put it on a number of ways. The rubber ring to which the quick release latch is a bit old but it seemed that it was closing the fork quite well.

Has anyone experienced this before? If I go into a bike shop could they fix this for me - and how much would I be looking at?

Are the springs attached to the QRs and the correct way around? If so is suspect the QR is buggered and needs replacing.
