Just wondering is that PSA 1.6 Turbo Diesel unit reliable? I'm talking about a 2005 model here, 109hp.

I know the rest of the car so pretty cool with the rest, just interested in what the engine is like.

If they are not serviced on the button then they will break your heart and wallet. I cannot image a 10 year old example being in perfect motoring order at this stage of it's life unless you can find a 1 owner example with a full service history.

I had a 06 myself a good few years ago and I was always spending money on it. Mostly small things but put together it was quite substantial, Volvo parts can be expensive.

Looks like the savings on tax compared to the 2.0D will be spent on maintenance then.

We have a 2006 V50 with the 2.0d engine and its been trouble free. Serviced around every 20k kms, only the DMF has failed at 170k kms. No other mechanical problems over 8 years.

What is the wind and road noise like on the V50?

I'd have the 2.0d over the 1.6d all day long. The 1.6d in the S40 felt quite sedated too whatever way Volvo tuned it.

Not bad, but it does get noisy above 140kph.

You'd be mad to choose a 1.6d over a 2.0d S40 just because of the tax saving. The difference in tax is less than €200 per year and the 2.0d is a far superior car in every way. A small price to pay IMO.

If it was the Drive model, that would make it a more interesting bean counting decision but they are a bit newer so the 2.0 seems to be where its at in my v50 research.
