Looks like there are going to be some very low flights over some counties this summer - 60m in rural areas and 240m in urban areas.

    Must be some quality flying.

Anyone seen anything like this before? What are they gathering info on?

The answer is in the first paragraph of the page you linked to ....

Tellus is a ground and airborne geoscience mapping programme, collecting chemical and geophysical data that will inform the management of Ireland's environment and natural resources. Tellus is undertaken by the Geological Survey of Ireland and is funded by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.

I guess I'm just surprised at how low they plan to fly.

That north midlands survey took place for the past 6 months and had 2 South African Cessna Caravans stationed full-time at Weston. It finished up about a month ago but I notice one of the aircraft was still there 2 weeks ago.

If they're surveying Meath, etc., then it will mean extra caution for traffic in and out of Weston to the training area.

We got a flyer (no pun intended) through our letterbox advising us that we can expect to be buzzed by these things in the next while. Will they appear on FR by any chance ??

It flew directly over my house today. I thought the plane was in trouble because it was so low, but then I noticed the "SURVEY" in bolded-capital letters on the underside of the plane. I have no idea how high it was, but it seemed to be higher than 60m and definitely lower than 240m. Not very noisy either.

Occasionally appears, but usually only in transit to area of ops, saw it south of Enfield track towards Weston but you won't see it down at -200ft

It's was over Newbridge house near Donabate on Thurs. Scared the poop out of me until I realised what it was.

I saw it over the M1 services at Lusk. On Thurs amd Friday evenings. It was a bit away, but it looked like the Twin Otter, rather than the Caravan. Can anyone confirm?

It flew a parallel patern about an hour later about a km further south i was outside and heard it and saw it dipping behind trees didnt look like a cessna caravan though.

    Yup, it's about.

I'd like to say it overflew Ashbourne yesterday afternoon, depending on where you were at the time, it would be more accurate to say that it came through Ashbourne:D I had to look between the buildings on the industrial estate to see it, due to the height it was at. Looked nice from the brief glimpse I got of it.

Nothing wrong with the way it is operating, if I was a few years younger, it's the sort of flying I'd have been very happy to be involved with.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

    Thanks for solving the mystery.

I was sat on the sofa the other day when it flew right over the house.

We have a field next to us that I think a lot of the Weston flyers use for practice forced landings, that Tellus flight was the first time I thought someone was coming in for real.

On March (23rd, I think) the Irish Meteorological Society will be hosting a talk by a member of the Tellus team. It was announced at their Space Weather talk lastnight.

I highly recommend attending these free talks put on by the IMS. They are usually in the Customs House in Dublin on one Thursday evening every month.

Yes it looks like it'll be an interesting talk alright. The space weather one was fascinating too!

It was a very interesting talk last night. Amazing detail in the maps they produce. They learn so.much about the geology and chemistry of what lies beneath.

The planes are on their way back to Ireland for the start of this year's mapping. They're currently stuck in Canada due to snow but they should get out in the next day or two and make the trip cross via Greenland and Iceland. They will pick up the instrumentation at Weston then base at Sligo for the season. They will be mapping Mayo and Donegal.

Go to www.tellus.ie to see amazing data

The Met Society certainly served up another good talk last night. Some very interesting information imparted alright. It was surprising to learn that TELLUS make the data they gather freely available despite the cost and complexity of gathering it in the first place.

Yes, and also that very few countries have a similar survey. Parts of Australia and west Africa, and Denmark, who have funded it by adding 0.5% to everybody's water bills. Imagine that being introduced here

Indeed, that notion raised a giggle or two :)

Well its paid for by the taxpayer so it's not really surprising that it would be free. Though I guess it's somewhat unusual to see state agencies with such an interest in providing public service, which is refreshing in itself.
