Used car not taxed in over 1 year, red flag?

    Hey,

Bought a new car over the weekend (well paid the deposit), it’s a 2007 Fiesta with 54k kilometres.

Car itself is spotless, bodywork great. It’s really in showroom condition to be honest. Test drive was fine aswell, no issues to report at all.

Only issue that came up is the cartel report flagged the tax has not been paid since June ’14 meaning it’s been off the road.

I got onto the garage straight away and they said it was because the car was owned by the grandmother of their main mechanic, she was unable to drive the car for the last year and she died recently so he’s selling it now.

The garage is a reputable one and the car will be serviced and have a fresh NCT and tax will be up to date when I pick it up this week, 3 month warranty also.

In all honesty I’m not too suspicious, should I be more concerned or have I done all I can do to ensure tis legit?

I suppose, how much weight can I put on the cartel report?

    Ta.

If it's been off the road a year my concerns would be around mould and dampness on the interior if it was sitting unused over the winter. I'd look at the tyres to see if they have cracks on them from sitting idle for a year in the same position.

They are putting it through the NCT today, would that pick it up if there was an issue with the tyres?

Are you sure car was actually off the road.
Knowing how it works in Ireland, very likely car was actually used untaxed, which would be probably better from your point of view.

It should but I would inspect them myself too. Basically your looking for cracks around the midway point of the wall of the tyre. Also with an elderly person using the car it could be possible that the tyres have lots of thread depth but are really old as they have not done many miles with them, the NCT will give an advisory to replace them if they are 6 years old but car will pass once road legal. The tyre will have the week and year marked on them that they were made, see below...

"the car was owned by the grandmother of their main mechanic,"

    Typical salesmen talk.

It seems as if every garage in the country seems to be selling family owned cars...
