Spotted a guy at up the cruagh road this afternoon, going the opposite way, full quickstep kit, s works, quickstep helmet, roval wheels etc etc. Any idea who he is or what he may be doing riding in Wicklow and Dublin?

Last time I jumped to that conclusion, it turned out to be Phillip Deignan.

No! He has been though, his girlfriend is Irish so has been spotted riding in Wicklow previously.

i saw the same lad about a month ago cycling down Orwell park around 8am on a weekday morning as i was running into work and was wondering the same thing myself - he certainly looked the part with the top end bike and full team kit!

I've seen him riding Mick Byrne 200 last Sunday. He was riding similar pace as me, definitely not a pro ;-)

Someone who's kit and bike value is inversely proportional to their ability

I would have thought the last thing a pro would were on a training solo spin would be full team kit ;)

    What else would they wear?
They are hardly going to fork out for some rapha or assos gear with their hard earned cash when they can just get team kit for free :D

He is. Porte was just mentioned as an example of a pro who has been spotted in Ireland before.

All pros train in their team kit. I'm pretty sure it's a contractual obligation.

He might be Swiss! I passed a group of 4 that were stopped the other day, all in full BMC kit and bikes but were in their 60's+. It's quite normal here for people to get the full kit to go with their bikes - usually with older guys I've noticed - and usually high end bikes.

It seemed to be the norm in Girona too, lots of amateurs in full team kit and lots of pros. Easy to spot the difference by the way they are on the bike and the physique. The pros look a lot leaner than they do on the telly; veins popping out the legs.

All the pros said hello (before we did), amateurs weren't so friendly.

    I'm Spartacus Fred.

I'd be out in rags if I matched kit to my ability :D

Same here mostly. When I (eventually) get out for a spin, most people here don't nod or wave or anything, even though I always do

Saw a guy in full Madison Genisis gear and team bike out a Blanchardstown a couple of weeks ago. I'd be extremely surprised if it wasn't a team rider given that most Freds probably wouldn't splash out that sort of cash for a steel framed bike.

More than likely Martin Irvine seeing as he lives in Swords and has been more less racing full time here for the past few months.
