Stamp 4 renewal after separation

Hi, Apologies if the wrong section-
I have found info online to be a bit vague, no direct nos. to call, email need gnib details etc.,and often contradictory info if you go on forums relating to this, so was wondering if anyone could help advise.
My Ex is non EU (we're separated, but not legally & haven't lived together over a year, two small children) his stamp 4 expired 2 months ago, as his passport had expired. He got a renewal (he's been getting short passports as to get a ten year one he'd have to travel to uk for biometric as there's no embassy here) but has to get a new stamp.
This is especially an issue, as he walked out of his job a few weeks ago and ceased paying child maintenance, which leaves me with big financial issues. He now can't get another one without his stamp. He's claiming he can't get dole yet (though tbh I don't think his stamps are up to much, but could be lying)
He said, to me, that they told him he'd either have to provide passports for his children or have me accompany him. Now the fact we're separated, not living together - is it the case that if I go, they'll provide it just based on us still being legally married? could it affect my single parent/carer tax credit in anyway? Tks

Presuming you're an Irish citizen, his entitlement to be here is regarded as discretionary in any case and if you're separated and living apart that could well be grounds for renewal to be refused. Usually if the non-custodial parent of (I assume) Irish citizen children is actually still involved in the child's life, it will be renewed, but he really should see an immigration solicitor.

Thanks for that. I am an Irish Citizen, yes.
It seems to be whoever you get on the day, indeed at their discretion.

First time he went, they told him he'd either have to bring his childrens passports(we don't have any yet), or have me accompany him - though we're separated.
Second time when he went, when he explained that we're separated and is living at a different address etc. but he could get a ticket and give me a ring to come in, they said it doesn't work like that and he should have advised them of the change of circumstances last year and they'd need to talk to a supervisor about issuing the stamp but wouldn't leave him waiting too long.
A couple of hours later they renewed his stamp and issued his new GNIB and urged him to apply for citizenship before his current passport expired.
