    What are we comparing here?

For all we know it could be a baseline Pisshat against a Type S Accord.

On looks alone I'd take the Accord.

    It's a Honda Accord 2.2l I-dtec ES vs a 2011 Passat Comfortline 1.6/2.0l

The reason I'm buying is because my wife is pregnant and I'm selling a her Yaris and buying a more baby friendly car. Based on your help it seems like I'll go with the Honda...I hope the car suits the baby needs too. Thanks for all yer help.

There are much better cars for a young family than a big saloon

True. I've the current Accord and it's reliable as hell, well equipped, comfortable and ideal on the motorway.

However, it's a PITA for kids stuff, especially when they were babies....base of pram in boot, top in back seat kind of thing. Wife has a Civic 5 door and it beats the hell out of the Accord for practicality in terms of babies. Even the access to the back of the car is very roomy in the Civic but awkward in the Accord, or any other saloon I'd imagine.

I think it sounds like its their first born child - ie they've never needed a "baby friendly car" car.

A saloon "should" do the job okay - if it was me personally - id have an Estate - the extra boot space should work very well for carrying babys stuff PLUS any extra stuff you might need to carry.

In saying that mind - from pics - the Skoda Superb twin door looks like it has a massive boot if one doesn't like Estates.

Edit - the points of the Accord owner poster above me are duly noted - im not familiar with the Accord boot

This will be our first baby and in the future I hope to get a more family friendly car too. I have a 06 VW that will be for my own use going to work etc whereas the possible Accord would mainly be for my wife and Child. In a couple of years I may trade the VW for a more family friendly car and then use the Accord for my own us.

So in the meantime should I go with the Accord or would it be unsuitable for my wife and child who will be possibly using it more?

What will be the usage pattern of the car??? obviously the car as you've said will be used by your wife - but will it be town use, motorway, travel to work????.

If your going to use the car for mainly town and short journey use - DPFs need factoring into the equation.

Also what does your wife think of the two cars.

    Has she driven them????

The fact another poster who owns an Accord above is negative about the car re being suitable for baby (a PITA he referred to it as) would be a turnoff for me.

Problem I see is that the likes of Quasquis which are often popular for this type of thing seem to have small boots. Its not that ive looked at Quasqui boots - but they are short at the back behind back seat

Octavia or Focus Estate might be worth a look

On a side note, have a look into extended rear facing car seats. If you are going extended rear facing you will need to make sure the car seat fits in the back of the car properly.

Also borrow a proper buggy and check how easy it is to fit in the boot.

If buggies etc are the order of the day, the accord boot is tight enough. I went from an 05 civic to an 09 accord.. The kids were well out of needing buggies.. I'm back in a civic tourer now it's it's great for carrying luggage etc..

    Cheers Mick

Honda Accord boot fits most buggies, absolutely no problem. We have had a buggy + a stroller in the boot with room for smaller bags. No problem at all. Accord will take two child seats in the back, but only a child / or a skinny person can fit in the middle seat between the child seats. It's not possible to fit three child seats, unless you get special / extra slim seats.

I agree with the sentiment that there are better cars out there than saloon for a young family. However between Passat and Honda, even with Passat being bigger inside than Honda, I would recommend Honda for supreme reliability and lower cost of ownership.

2.2 diesel Accord gets great reviews in terms of the engine and general reliability. Its meant to be one of the quietest estates out there which will help a lot.

The Accord is not great on fuel though.

Agreed 40mpg on average in mine when I had it... Still though lovely car.. Would the passat be 10% more fuel efficient?

I was getting close to 50mpg from my Passat CC. The Bluemotion TDi engines are very good on fuel.

Which generation of Accord did you have?
All the reviews I've read were for the 8th Gen and MPG was in the 50s.

    Real world or claimed figures?

A fair few user reviews have it from late 40s to mid 50s but the main ones I trust are Parker's and Honest John. They are bang on with 6 or so cars I'd take the time to monitor MPG on so I trust them over individual reviews.

Well it's fairly well known that they are not the most frugal but I'd like to see what mpg similar cars like the Passat would do under the same test conditions as those reviews.
