    Hi there

Read through the stickies and couldn't find anything on this specific question.

Apologies if it's a really stupid question now....

I'm new to protein powder and am wondering if there is much difference between different protein powders or is it just down to personal preference.

For example, I'm going to be making my own protein bars this week. The recipe I have says to use hemp protein.

I also found a recipe for a post gym smoothie that says to use whey protein (is that even right - to be having protein AFTER the gym? Is it not better beforehand?)

Anyway, my question is - do I need all these different bags of protein powders or will any really do? Or are there some powders that would go fine in a bar but awful in a smoothie?

Thanks and remember I'm new to this stuff so sorry if the question is ridiculous

    B

Can't really help with the differences, but I find Whey great for shakes/ overnight oats etc.

However, I haven't had much joy with anything that involves heating it. I've tried a variety of protein pancake recipes using it, and tbh the results haven't been great. It goes quite rubbery when heated. Actually, I've tried putting a scoop on porridge before, and it didn't really work - I ended up just having a shake with water, and then eating my porridge!

Just on this, it doesn't really matter when you take it around a workout.

As regards different types, I can't say how different ones will react in a recipe where there will be heating going on. But unless there's an issue like lactose intolerance, it won't really matter. Whey usually has a higher protein content than other varieties, afaik.

Studies have shown that consistently eating enough protein every day in the long run is the most important thing. Timing doesn't matter much at all.

    Hi OP,

Here is a nice, easy to read guide about protein supplements. It should answer most of your questions.

Also, protein powders are waaaay cheaper online.
A few good websites to purchase from are My Protein, Bulk Powders, Discount Supplements, and The Protein Works.

And here is a website that 'ranks' protein supplements.

And this is a great recipe for home-made protein bars.

    Enjoy :)

You're better off just getting whey protein (Isolate/blend/whatever) imo. There's hundreds of recipes online, don't feel obliged to stick the one you have.

If you use MyProtein, they always have offers, check their Twitter/Instagram/Facebook and their homepage as they all have codes for discounts. They regularly have 20%/30% off.

Also, some Youtubers have discount codes, I used "THEDK" or "LIPSETT10" for 10% off everything (always works). i think if you go to the MyProtein site add stuff to your basket and try the codes above, they can be used with other codes from MyProtein to save you a load of money. Then sign in and pay.
