Not sure what I do when viewing a car?

I'm going to look at a car tomorrow around 50 miles away. I have someone with me to drive my car back if I decide to ahead with the purchase.

Only thing I'm worried about is that there will be no tax or insurance on the car. Is there something I can do beforehand for it to be legit to be driven. Also is it me or the previous owner who sends off the log book?

    Thanks

You may not be able to transfer your insurance over from your current car to the new one at the time of purchase if the insurance company is closed for the day so first of all call your insurance company tomorrow and find out what time they are opened till. Alot of the bigger companies had customer call centres that stay open until about 7 or 8 pm so it might be possible to contact them to switch it over at the time of purchase.

Otherwise you will need to get someone else with their own insurance policy that has extended third party cover to drive other cars. That way they can drive the new car home for you while you drive your old ca, then transfer the insurance over the following day. Remember if you transfer your insurance over to the new car then your old car is no longer insured so you will still need someone with their own policy to drive your old car home. Above all do not attempt to chance driving the car home that is not insured.

The seller is not to give the log book directly to you. You sign the change of ownership section and the seller posts it off, best bring an envelope (address where to send it to should be on the log book) and both you and seller drop it into the nearest post box. That way you know for sure it being posted otherwise the seller might get lazy and forget about sending it off meaning extra hassle for you to transfer ownership.

What sort of money/price is car.
    What make and year etc.

I would suggest if you know nothing about cars get someone who does to look at it.

The log/vlc book/cert is sent off by original/previous owner.
If you are buying the car you need insuarance you can't just drive off.

If there is no tax you should be ok if stopped once you can prove you have just purchased the car and will be taxing as soon as your details have been updated. You don't have to wait for log book to arrive as details will be updated before this so you can tax online after a few days.

Check car over and be careful who you are buying off and not in a car park uinless you are sure its a genuine sale.. use your gut if it feels wrong most likely is.

Take a photo of log book when details are filled in as this will be handy to have if you are stopped or have any problems with log book going missing.

Have a read of the sticky by Limerick Man at the top of this page. There's a huge amount of great information on that. Best of luck.
