I'm a decent runner, been doing it for years and look like your stereotypical distance runner, and idiots still shout things at me when I'm running by in an attempt to provoke a reaction. I can understand how those kind of people put people off, but you can't let it get to you. You've got to understand that their opinions count for nothing. Anyone who trains, be it in running, strength training or whatever, never makes those kind of comments, because they understand and appreciate what it takes to better yourself, despite the level you're currently at.
I couldn't care less what people think about me when I'm training. I'm usually the lightest person when I'm in the gym, but I know what I'm there for, to supplement my running, not to deadlift 250kg. We all have different goals, and they'll always be somebody better and somebody worse than you.
The only comments you should take on board are from people who know what they're talking about, someone who offers constructive criticism to help you achieve whatever it is you're training for.
