Some questions about buying a category D car in the UK

I don't know much about cars, but am looking at buying my first car since moving to the UK last year (not my first car ever - have owned a few before this in other countries!). I realise not everyone here will be an expert on buying to the UK, but hoping someone will be able to clarify a few things!

Looking at buying a car through a guy in work. All seemed well with it until I found out it was a Category D write off. Just for some context, the car is a Ford Focus, 2007. He's looking for £2900 (But I know he'll take less).

    So a couple of questions:

    1. Am I correct in saying that there should be nothing major wrong with it? It has since passed an MOT (it has MOT up until April 2016), so I presume anything major would have been picked up then?

    2. Does the fact that it's Cat. D affect insurance? I have some quotes from insurance companies, but should I be going back to them to and informing them that it's a Cat. D?

    3. In general, how major an issue should I see this as? Does the fact that this is a relatively older car, and the sum of money isn't huge, make the fact that it's a category D as smaller issue?

Thanks in advance for the replies!

This would usually be as you are aware something minor lets say a door, bumber and wheel or something like this senario and the cost for to be reepaired up to new like status would cost more in some cases then car is worth at times.

Cat C and D I have found at times could be something fairly simple like stolen and recovered but insurance has already paid out to genuine owner and then to recoup some money these are sold on.

I bought a 2007 Focus a few years back and it had the boot lid and glass damaged but not bad and was repaired.

Its always great to know what has happened and how bad as I have bought and sold cars/jeeps that have been damaged and been straight up about it on both sides so always good to know.

Resale for you may be slightly more difficult but if got at a good price that would not bother me.
