I have an 07 1.4 petrol focus. The engine is too small for the size of the car. It's terribly slow and VERY hard on petrol.

Apart from that, it has given me very little trouble. I wouldn't buy one if you you were doing much driving.

1.6 is much nicer to drive.

I have a mk1 focus 1.4. It's underpowered alright but if that doesn't bother you too much, it's a great car. Thinks to watch out for would be noisy front drop links, central locking not working, floppy gear stick (simple fix), leaking power steering fluid. These are the only things that went wrong with mine.

Yeah it's mainly for my girlfriend who has a very short drive to work.. So power wouldn't be top of the list of requirements.. I just think there one of the nicer looking cars in our price range

Very reliable too, still loads of them on the roads. I'll probably be getting one for the gf too. One of the best bangernomics cars out there.

Bazz is right. A 1.6 Zetec model is a nice car. Avoid basic ones like an LX.

A Mk1 1.4 is not quite as depressing as a Mk2 1.4 but the 1.6 engine makes a huge difference to them.

I owned the 1.4 for almost two years. Problems I had were bad drop links, cv joint, corroded handbrake cable, crankcase breather pipes worn out (gave a rough idle), couple of bad wheel bearings, gearbox wasn't great and had lots of residue around the transmission bearing (drivers side). Oh and central locking didn't work properly (drivers door).

I know other people with the focus who haven't had as many issues as I did. Think I bought a neglected one. First and last time the mother views a car for me!

Parts were very cheap and it passed the nct without issue every time. All you need for an A to B I suppose.

Thanks for the replies guys.. I bought a 1.4, nice solid car.. A better step up from my last 2 cars a 1.0 corsa and a crap 1.4 polo.. Just cheap run arounds.. Nice to have something with a bit more space
