1st PC BUILD.....

I`ve decided to take the plunge and assemble a PC for the first time. The PC will be mainly used for Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX). Here is a parts list I did: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/MbwXqs

Are there any better value websites than PC part picker?

Hardwareversand is what most here use.
Build is a bit unbalanced, I'd recommend an i5 4460 with a better card like a 280x or GTX 960. Thatd save another bit by using a H97 instead of Z97
Windows can be gotten for €20

    Have you a defined budget?

Actually, I see that FSX is CPU bound. Get a Xeon 1231v3 in that case, with a H97 board. 750Ti should be fine.

How can I get it for 20? Ideally, I would like my budget to be less as I am already a couple hundred over my initial budget.

Name a budget there and I'll try to squeeze in the best I can. I'll post a windows link with it

No worries, its the same as your second build but in a smaller case with a weaker power supply, but you dont need a large one anyways.

I was just wondering if there was anyway I could swap that Xeon for the I5 4690K considering they are of similar prices. What motherboard and case of a similar price to the parts mentioned above would be best? I`ve heard the I5 4690K has better performance when it comes to FSX. Also, do I need a wristband for building?

Better performance than the Xeon specifically? I'd be doubtful of that but I'll look into it. Its just a straight swap, everything else is compatible with he Xeon or 4690k.

You don't need one, but it can be handy. You can ground yourself off the inside of the case either

FSX doesn't use hyperthreading, SK yeah the i5 is actually a better option in this case! Are you going to be over clocking it?

I'll leave the option for overclocking open. I'll probably buy a cooler eventually for overclocking. Will the motherboard that was for the Xeon be compatible with the 4690k?

Yeah but you can't over clock on it. I'll link one now

Pushing the budget closer to €700 as Z boards are more expensive. Can get a decent cooler for €30 if you wanted to throw all into it at once, but its not a big job to add one later if you so wish

Ok, Thanks! Do i need that cooler even though I can`t overclock? I presume the I5 4690K comes with a default cooler and thermal paste?

You can over clock with the i5s default fan yes, not very much but on something like FSX it'd make a difference anyways. A new cooler would allow you to get bigger over clocks. You could chance the stock fan and decide afterwards if an OC is even necessary

Final parts list, a little over budget but worth it considering the CPU can overclock. I`ll probably do that if I buy a fan.

That adds €30 so you can knock that off if you're self building. Run the parts through geizhals.de now to knock a few euro off if you're self building

On geizhals.de, I managed to knock off 70 euro! Build cost is 627, can I order all these components together or do I have to buy them separately?

After geizhals brings you back to hwvs, you can add them to your basket and get the next part as normal, and order in bulk

Just wondering if there is anypoint of buying an overclocked CPU with a motherboard. Its a bundle I found on ebay:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-Core-I5-4690-3-9Ghz-Gigabyte-H81M-H-Motherboard-Cooler-Pc-Bundle-/371068598351?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item566569784f

Would this be good considering the CPU also comes with a cooler?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭Digital Solitude

That isn't overclocked. Its running I'm turbo mode, not a real overclock

Not worth it then? Would turbo mode be easy to configure?

Yeah its handy enough I'd say, I haven't bothered with my CPU though.

That bundle is €20 more expensive that what you're going for, its got the stock Intel cooler, same as you

I`ll stick to gezhals then. I can`t figure out how to extract the parts in bulk to HWVS, is there a tutorial somewhere on it?

I normally run each part through and open the HWVS link in a new tab, then the next one, so at the end I've 7 tabs for hwvs open, and just add the parts to the basket one by one.

So its i5 4690k, open in new tab, then PSU, open in new tab and so on add them all at the same time. If you can't work it, shout and I'll get the links for you

I just did the price check and the total excluding shipping is 631 euros! :) Hoping to buy it in the next 2 months or so.
