A load of nasty judgement and prejudice from that guy in an opinion piece. http://www.theblaze.com/contributions/bruce-jenner-is-not-a-woman-he-is-a-sick-and-delusional-man/

We already know there are bigots, he's just one more.

Jenner is pretty brave to follow her heart at this point in her life, in the full glare of publicity. That takes a level of determination and guts I don't even understand.

Gender-reassignment surgery: because there's simply no easier way for a celebrity to get attention.

Pretty ignorant response right here. There are people who go their entire lives living inside what feels like the wrong body for fear of being on the wrong end of ridicule just like this.

Meh, him/her and their whole family are one rolling reality show. If anyone thinks this was done without even a thought about publicity then they need their head examined.

What was the need to pose on Vanity Fair after your gender re assignment? Loads go through the same procedure without the need to appear on a magazine after...

There's a big difference though. Gender reassignment is changing your body parts. Having looked on twitter, many seem to think Bruce Jenner has deep rooted issues. Just from what I've read.

I posted that article to get others opinions on it. I agree a lot of it is very extreme and I don't agree with EVERYTHING the author has said, it could have been written more compassionately

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,761 ✭✭✭✭RobertKK

It would be an extreme way to gain attention.

Heard it described on a radio program that gender sexuality should be viewed on a scale from extreme masculine to extreme feminine, and the reality being most people are not at the extremes, but somewhere inbetween.
Maybe a man with a feminine characteristics and feels feminine, or vice versa.
It can't be easy, if you think about it, especially for those who go for surgery.

Obviously someone who does something like this would have deep rooted issues and surely he needs help with his mind, not his body? :/ I say this as I read this article which has some great points http://www.theblaze.com/contributions/bruce-jenner-is-not-a-woman-he-is-a-sick-and-delusional-man/ I do feel for his daughters, it must be so utterly surreal for them!

For the Jenner children, the issue of the transition has become a non-issue. They were already aware of their father’s identity as a woman when he told them individually about the transition—Burt and Cassandra had learned from their mother roughly 20 years earlier, when they were 13 and 11; Brandon had assumed it because of the obvious physical changes he had observed; and Brody was told by his mother when he was 29. They tell Bissinger they feel both happiness for their father and inspiration at his bravery, and they all still see their dad as their dad regardless of any gender label. Brandon said he was a little taken aback when he saw Caitlyn for the first time after surgery and she pulled her top up to reveal her new breasts. “Whoa, I’m still your son,” he reminded her.

How the fck do you reach the conclusion that "obviously" gender reassignment isn't the right solution here. Was it after reading an online celebrity gossip magazine article...is that how you reach your conclusion?

    Tremendous.

Fair play to her, can't be easy putting up with cynicism and amateur hour pop pyschology diagnosis.

Primarily because she was invited. You don't ring Vanity Fair and ask to be photographed by Annie Liebovitz and put on the front cover.
I'd imagine it's also largeley due to a desire to normaise the concept of transgender as there's still an absurd level of prejudice against transgender people.
And also probably personal pride at having finally become the person she knew she was.
And yes, lots of other people are transgender individuals, but they're not world-famous Olympians and reality-tv stars, so they wouldn't attract the attention of your average Vanity-Fair cover star.

Even if she had done this due to emotional issues (which is highly doubtful as few professionals would ok the procedure if there were doubts about her mental state), so what? It's her life, it doesn't affect you.

I've seen a good few articles that say BJ probably has some issues and this may not make him happy in the long run. One I believe was written by some psychologist. The articles I've read raised some good points and I did find myself agreeing with most of what was said

This. I have immense respect for the whole family for doing this in the public eye. When someone so well known does something "unusual" it normalises it, which helps others who are dealing with their own issues.

And to those saying he's doing it for attention

Bruce has said that he has known since he was a child that he was a woman. It's only now he has enough strength to become the woman she is.

Haha, a good few articles!...in gossip magazines. Right.

    "Some pyschologist"

    Profound indeed.

I do recommend having a read through the transgender AMA on boards here.

You might find it more illuminating than click bait articles.

You didn't, and it didn't literally mean it affects your life.

"How does this affect your life?" is an idiomatic phrase meaning "Why do you care?," "Why does it bother you?" or "So what?"

And? He/she felt like a woman trapped in a mans body so he/she decided to change that. I think that's pretty much the bones of it, what issues exactly do you believe he/she has that need to be solved?

    Her.

And the media hounded Bruce while he was transitioning, so much so he felt he had to speak out about it rather than transition privately. If she does an interview and "comes out" so to speak it's on her terms and its in the open. Loads go through the same procedure in private and have their "coming out" to friends and family without the intrusion of the media and thousands of ignorant people posting nasty comments online about them.

Looks great and takes some bravery to do it.

OP those undergoing gender reassignment usually have a lot of medical (and psychological) support to get there so don't sweat it.

By "eat op alive" I hope you mean that I'm gonna politely inform them that no, being transgender is not a mental disorder, that every serious medical institute says it's not a disorder, and that all scientific evidence we have on the subject so far is showing that it something that someone is born with? Because I don't think I'm coming across any way other than polite and informative and hopefully sometimes funny too?

Yes, could have worded it better myself :)

I.e you will be able to refute the pseudo science links etc

I have no problem with the gender reassignment business if that's what he/she felt was necessary but I think it's really selfish of her to launch this lifestyle on the front of a magazine in an underwear shoot. Posing in your knickers has very little to do with being a woman, I don't see it as an expression of femininity or a female identity, just a cheap attention seeking ploy. She still had kids in their teens. Its way too much for a parent to throw at young kids.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,730 ✭✭✭Sheep Lover

So you change your gender and then appear on Vanity Fair for publicity? How is this not partly a publicity stunt?

Well of course they have deep-rooted issues, and transitioning is only one of the ways in which people who are transgender are able to receive help in the form of counselling long before they ever undergo any hormone treatments or cosmetic surgery procedures to alter their physical appearance.

I say this as I read this article which has SOME great points although a lot is very extreme and could have been written wth more compassion. http://www.theblaze.com/contributions/bruce-jenner-is-not-a-woman-he-is-a-sick-and-delusional-man/

"Professional truth teller"? From the off, that guy is simply a wind-up merchant, and that article isn't even worth taking seriously. I don't think he made any great points at all, and there are far better and more useful resources out there if you would like to understand transgenderism.

I do feel for his daughters, it must be so utterly surreal for them!

Yep, I'd agree with this alright, especially given how his daughters and his ex-wife Kris are having to come to terms with the fact that the person they knew as their father has effectively had to live a lie for most of her life. They're having to come to terms with Bruce's transformation into Caitlyn in the glare of the media spotlight and it can't be and won't be easy for them.

These people may be celebrities, but at the end of the day they're all still human beings like any of the rest of us.

I dunno, there's not much in the way of pseudo science to refute, folks generally seem positive in this thread, and saying she's doing it for the attention? Well, that's just idiotic and not even in need of comment. Yeah, I mean there's really not much for me to do here apart from say fair play to her, and I think things for trans people have reached a real tipping point lately. There's still a lot of nastiness, but it doesn't so much feel like "us vs. the world" any more. And that's nice :)

    Now I'll be off ;)
