I get a lad to make round bales of haylage every year for horses. I have about 20 bags of 18.6.12 and wondered what are the best conditions for spreading. Any helpful advice?

    Ground trafficable - not waterlogged.

No heavy rain forecast for at least 24 hrs

Those are good conditions for to spread fertiliser now

With current weather conditions unless its sandy soil I would be waiting a week to let the weather settle!....we had a shower there that would cause a flood in the Sahara.

am I late in spreading? It would suit me to wait a week, but don't I need to avoid cutting meadow for at least six weeks after fertiliser?

Just give the ground a couple of days to dry up after today's deluge.

You've loads of time. It's still early.

Try and get it out this week and probably give it up to 8 weeks for a decent crop

Time depends on units of N per acre. For 18.6.12 for every bag per acre you've to wait 9 days. Also with haylage you wilt it more so N isn't as big an issue.

How many acres are you spreading the 20 bags on?

    10 acres

The N will be well gone after a month. Let the ground heat up a little and then get it out and hopefully it will get a light shower or two.

Won't have much of a crop after 18 days.

You need to leave at least 5 - 6 weeks

The question was would he have to avoid cutting for 6 weeks. With 36 units of N you can cut after 18 days. How long you leave it after that is a completely different matter.
