Hacking aircraft avionics via entertainment systems (IFE)

Paul’s Security Weekly netcast has an interview with the guy (Chris Roberts) who was detained for checking out the security of in-flight entertainment systems during a flight. He was obviously on an old aircraft where they used to have the IP box under the seat (rather than under the floor as is the norm in newer aircraft). He has this theory that the inflight entertainment systems are inter-connected with the flight management and control systems….. Thus offering an opportunity to attack the aircraft avionics via a spare port on the “set top box” under the PAX seat. I find it hard to believe that these are not run on separate networks – as most of them are add-ons installed after the aircraft leaves the factory. In any event it would be extremely stupid of an aircraft manufacturer to put an RJ45 type connection which leads to the avionics systems on an aircraft under a seat in each row segment.

If this guy is a Walter Mitty, why does this thread have to be edited and censored?
