Hi, I'm turning 17 in August and will be getting my leaner permit. I won't be able to get insured in my dads Peugeot van as apparently you have to be over 25 to get insured on a commercial van. My mothers car is a Land Rover discovery and not a hope will I get insured on it. So what do ye think is the cheapest car to get insured on if I decide to buy one myself? Thanks for reading

Try getting quotes on the usual suspects, Micras, Fiestas, Corsas, Polos etc...

I suspect small petrol engine cars are your best bet, if you can afford it something newer will decrease your premium too as it have more safety features.

Cheers! Is some insurance companies cheaper then others or r they all the same? Also is it true that u can't get insured on a commercial van until u r over 25?

Each insurance company is completely different, make sure to ring around for prices, not sure on the commericial insurance, no experience with it, maybe someone with experience will come along but I'd imagine its the same as with price, some companies will require you to be over 25 but some might not, again worth ringing around to check.

There is no "best" company when it comes to insurance as prices vary from company to company and are dependent on the individual. You need to ring around, there is no shortcut.

The one that gives you the best quote. Any given day, it could be any of them, depending on what number they pull out of their arse.

Starting out with insurance will be cripplingly expensive, there's no way around that. Some places might insure you on the van, but if you can manage it, it's best to get insured in your own name as your premiums will go down quicker.

My own premium went from €2,100 to €1,600 to €1,000 odd over two years with what was then Quinn. Once you start proving that you're a good driver, they reward you pretty quickly - a drop of more than 50% in 24 months. That was in the bad days about 8 years ago and was after 1 year as a named driver.

    Just do. not. crash.
