Buying/Insuring a car from USA

I'm Irish in NYC - dual citizen. Been renting cars on trips back home for years, no bother. But, I've been spending more and more time home these last few years and would anticipate that being the case going forward. I'm just after going to book the rental for this year's trip and realised for the cost, I could buy a car to have when I'm home. I just did some google'ing to try and see if I could do this and came across all sorts of advice, often conflicting, as to whether this is possible. So, I figured I'd take a shot here and see if anyone has any advice, experience, or knows where/who I could contact to get an answer.

Me: I'm 44 yrs old, fully licensed driver in NYC. I own my own homes here and back in Mayo, but never had a license in Ireland. I'd be the only driver and the car would be used for a couple of months (around 4) each year.

I'm not fooling myself - I'm sure if I can buy/register a car, the insurance won't be cheap, but long term, I'm thinking I'll be saving thousands of Euros a year on car rentals.

So - any ideas if this is possible?

Probably cheaper to buy a car here than paying for shipping, import duties and VRT. You will also have the expense of converting it to meet certain regulations (e.g. indicators must be a separate amber flashing lamp, the combined red tail/indicator common in US is not permitted). In addition, insurance on a LH drive car would probably be significantly higher than a RHD.

I think he's considering buying a car here.

There's no reason why you can't buy and reg a car here, your insurance will be high as it will be first time, and on a US licence.
Depending on the length of your visits here, it might be a good idea to do an Irish driving test.

As usual, probably Irish car insurance industry, will make what OP is looking for impossible.
There's no insurers which will be happy to insure a person who is not resident in Ireland.
