First Time Buyer Questions

Hi, first time buyer, full licence (was previously named driver on mother's Micra, not any longer), late 20s in Clare. I've been reading the tips in the stickied thread and the tips that DoneDeal have, but those tips are more for examining a car you already have your eye on.

I've a more general problem: I'm just not sure which car suits me, and whether the security a dealer can offer in services and warranties balances out the lower prices that can be got from a private seller. I've been browsing DoneDeal, Carzone.ie and local used car dealer websites.

I'm out in the countryside so a car is a must. I've looked at a few dealers in the locality and I figured a budget of €3-4K would suit. I can go higher but as it's a first time car, I think I'd best try and offset that against running costs.

I've gotten a lot of differing opinions, from preferred makes and models (Corollas seeming to be the best bet), to some saying to just bring a mechanic along with me to a private seller and give it a good examination, to sticking with the dealer's level of service.

Should I be more concerned with the mileage (circa 100,000 miles) and age (06 the newest) of the what the local dealers are offering in my price range?

I know there are a lot of vague questions there, but seeing as I'm starting from scratch here, I'd really appreciate any advice!
