Awful story. When I was in Italy I never had any trouble and always felt safe. It's so terrible what happened this man in Ireland.

Thug hit him as his back was turned. Coward. Should have got double the sentence.

I don’t think he’d be able to move back as things are. He’s looking for a nursing home but there isn’t any home here that can provide him with the kind of mental stimulation that he needs.

That's very sad i had never heard of it before.

First thing that came to mind after reading about the recent attack on a disabled guy in the park a few weeks back.

Came across this piece about Guido Nasi, a young Italian lad whose life was effectively ruined by a thug with a bottle in Fairview Park in 1999. Pretty sad reading.

That sadness can only be compounded by the hardly unexpected reality that the individual responsible for Guido Nasi's torture has been fully rehabilitated by the Irish Penal system.....yea..right...

James Osbourne, 39, was travelling in a Mazda 626 that was allegedly speeding and failed to stop for a garda patrol car before smashing into a taxi.

Witnesses said Osbourne and four others were taken from the scene in Dublin's north inner city on spinal boards.

Gardai believe Osbourne was in the car with three other men when they spotted a patrol car at Seville Place and drove off.

The vehicle allegedly sped through Drumcondra before ploughing into a taxi on Griffith Avenue shortly after 1am on Monday

The usual oul guff..."Dad of one" etc etc....A far more realistic punishment for this individual would be for him to be forced to physically assist Mr Nasi's 73 year-old mother,in her daily task of cleaning up after Osbornes bout of alcoholic playfullness.

Attacking somebody from behind and laying into the back of their skull with a half-full bottle causing this level of injury, should at least bring the perpetrator a lifetime of physical reminders? ..but that's not a runner...Mr Osborne has a clean slate now..his debt to Irelands State is fully paid...fair play to him eh ?....:(

There have been a few horrible stories like that in recent years, an American woman left with 10% sight and migraines after getting glassed by some scumbag at a St Patricks day parade, Spanish students getting the sh1t beaten out of them for their iPhones etc, I always cringe when I hear of tourists getting treated badly...

I often wonder why for attacks like this the charge isn't attempted murder-isn't it a logical follow on from such an attack that it could kill? I guess easier to prove something else, in which case we need mandatory minimum sentences for such thuggery and an end to the "rehabilitation" nonsense.

They are targets. You don't think so much when on holiday.

He changed his plea to guilty and expressed remorse...ha! It's easy to be remorseful when the judge is about to throw your ass in jail. No doubt we'll be reading about thug junior in a few years. The apple never falls far from the tree.

Terrible story, I remember it well. Makes you wonder really what kind of city Dublin is supposed to be. Terrible that we don't even the facilities for him in the whole of country. High time people take a look around them and those in power and what they haven't achieved in 20 years. Disgrace.

    I didn't hear that's so awful.

The lads name is Paul Deaton...he had the misfortune to meet with some Fairview Park "regulars"..... :(

    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/news/man-31-with-special-needs-left-with-serious-head-injuries-after-violent-teen-attack-31148971.html

Thankfully he has made good progress since and fair play to EDI/Irish JCB for following up on their earlier promise to arrange a JCB day for the chap.

Sadly for Guido Nasi, there is no such goodwill...he's Italian and therefore it's up to the Italian State to look after his needs, even if they came from one of our friendly City's alcoholics...sad beyond belief, but that's life as we choose to portray it. :(

I was going to write something but I'm too fcuking annoyed about this crap happening every day of the week in the country.
I just read that the scrot appealed the sentence on the grounds that it was 'excessive in the circumstances' according the **** for brains' solicitor.

    BAH!!!

He has visited again Guido. He is friends with someone in the Irish tourist assistance board he visited again although lives in Italy. I just read it some articles online. It's so sad.

I'm simply desensitized to these stories because they're so common.

It pays to be a complete knacker in this country unfortunately.

"Violent Osbourne, who has 19 previous convictions, served an eight-year sentence for the brutal attack"

Only 19 previous convictions. One of these days they are definitely going to get tough with him.

Jesus, I do remember that alright. Was so much worse that just a common assault. It was (to me at least) an attempt on the poor guys life. He may not have taken his life, but he certainly took enough of it.

He is living in Italy in barge his 73 yr old mother takes care of him now. He seems so full of joy and empathy for the world imagine wanting to visit Ireland again after what happened.
The Italian student who was left paralysed after a vicious assault in Fairview Park, has spoken of his heartbreak for the family of the young man kicked to death near the same location.Guido Nasi (27), who was left paraplegic from his injuries, described the fatal attack on Barry Walsh as "evil".

I'm currently trying to figure out whether I want to return to Ireland after 5 years away. It's shit like this that is giving me serious pause for thought.

We are far too lenient when it comes to these louts. Build more prisons.

Put scummers in them and set them on fire.

You cannot be SERIOUS ?

There is apparently a secret Constitutional entitlement that the Supreme Court will allow EVERY citizen at least 200 strikes before declaring them "Suitable for Restorative Justice"....Read and weep..

    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/courts/man-banned-from-driving-for-20-years-after-36th-offence-for-driving-with-no-insurance-31253527.html
Eric Keogh (26), who has 192 previous convictions, including 35 for driving without insurance, was on temporary release at the time of the current offences.

ONE HUNDRED AND NINTEY TWO PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS.....The bleedin line should be inscribed on a Brass Plate and scrrewed to the Door of the so-called Supreme Court,to allow it's members to reflect upon the destructive effect of their fixation with the sanctity of bail for recidivist offenders at all costs.....:(

But to address your original point,19 Previous does not even entitle one to be even a bit miffed,so just toddle along there now !!!

Hopefully something truely terrible will happen that scumbag some day so that he too can experience what he done to someone else. Death would be far too good for a vile piece of **** like that.

How can the State not be criminally liable for allowing these people to walk free in society??

They are, or at least they should be. There was another thread. Regarding a man. He was from a traveling community. He also was attacked he sued the hotel for not giving enough security but lost. Obviously the liability and responsibility are totally different. But society does not benefit from allowing certain parts of it go wild.

Actually in reference to that case of the man from the traveling community it would be interesting to know if the person who attacked him had any previous convictions.
