It's very easy to connect at Newark with United- all your bags will be checked through to Chicago at Shannon and boarding passes issued there (That is of course if it's all a single ticket which it probably is)

When you arrive at Newark you will walk into the departures lounge when you get off the flight, then it's just a case of going to the gate for the next flight.

No more security as you'll have cleared US Customs and Immigration at Shannon and effectively arrive as a domestic Passenger.

Newark has been renovated recently – for those who were used to the old food options, be aware that they're all gone in favour of what I can only call as "trendy" alternatives. Orders are now placed with iPads...

If you're arriving at Shannon at around 7am you'll have loads of time.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, and other posters please correct me if this has since changed or if airport dependent.

Since you will clearing US Customs & Immigration in Shannon and landing in a domestic terminal in Newark, to the best of my knowledge you will have to go through airport security again before boarding your connecting flight, the way it worked for me in the past on a similar transfer was that when I checked my luggage in at Dublin, and the luggage 'bag tag' had the final destination, i had to pick my luggage up in Chicago and place it on the "Transfer belt" and then go through security before bording the second leg, albeit this was before we had customs in Dublin so perhaps that might change things with the luggage?

Anyway, not to confuse you - The best advice I can offer is to confirm the current procedure with the check in staff in Shannon, even if your luggage is routed to final destination I think you still have to go through security screening again.

Indeed that used to be the procedure before the new customs & border protection facility was put in place in Dublin + Shannon so it no longer applies
