Hi, I am selling an item through donedeal, I have a reply from someone in the Ukraine that he wants to buy it, he said he will pay through PayPal and organise shipping himself. I have never used PayPal before so I'm wondering if it is safe? The item in question is nearly 4000 euro

Ask yourself why he is looking at done deal if he's from the Ukraine. Sounds fishy to me.

I would strongly advise against using Paypal. Insist on Escrow.com or BTC or no deal.

Lots of sellers have lost disputes with proof of post etc, PP always side with the buyer.

    screams of a scam

    It absolutely stinks of scam.

It's very easy to use a compromised Paypal account, or stolen credit card, to fund a payment. Even if you get the money and clear it to your account, Paypal will refund the buyer in the event of it being a stolen card or account, and they will come after you for the money.

As said above, is this product something that can be bought in Ukraine, or is it kind of a rare or exclusive thing? If there's not a very compelling reason for why someone from so far away would be buying this from Ireland, then stay well away from it.

I would say that this is 99.99% sure to be a scam.

A friend of mine was scammed using Paypal. This was on a craft website.

He had made an item, offered for sale for around €250. Got a buyer all agreed, said he'd pay by Paypal. Next thing gets an e-mail "from Paypal" saying they have his funds but won't release them until he supplies the An Post tracking number.

Friend does that - nothing more heard. Queried it with Paypal "Oh that wasn't from us".

    Pig sick :(

if the buyer arranges shipping, you'll have no record of postage/delivery.
so they can then go make a paypal claim, and they'll automatically find in favour of the buyer because you have no tracking details.

I wouldn't use paypal in this situation. The item is clearly a high value. The fact someone in the UKraine was looking at done deals seems a bit odd to me. Also you said that they have offered to arrange the shipping, I would wonder would they get the documents regarding the shipping rather than you, they could then claim that they did not receive the item.

Paypal is great for buyers but not very good for sellers. If a buyer puts in a claim they have a tendency to side with the buyer and refund the money. Buyers can claim they did not receive the item, that it was damaged on arrival or even that you sent them an empty box and normally paypal will refund.
