    What does a p45 show?

SIL took three months off work for stress and has found a new job as the stress was caused by old job. She is worried that once they see her p45, it will show an anomaly on her salary and taxes because of the illness benefit.

We read about a revenue issued certificate that lists tax credits etc - is this a better option?

Ya, just tell the employer that she lost her P45 or didn't get it yet.

She needs to get the employer's registration number and call Revenue with it and her start date, then they will issue the documents that her new employer needs. The employer won't be able to work her salary out from that.
