temporary card

A family member has been using a temporary social welfare card to collect his JSA for the last 4 months. The office have now told him it won't be renewed as they need his passport. He has applied for one but not received it yet as he had to send the application to the UK as he needs a British passport. He can't collect his money without it.

Can they only except passports or is any other photo i.d accepted?

I don't mean to slag them off because generally they're very good but it wouldn't be the first time they've made a mistake on what's needed.

Not being intentionally rude here. But the clue is in the name. It was only ever temporary. It's really up to your family member to make sure that any possibly-needed Paperwork that may be required to obtain a proper card is sent in. I guess there's a need to be a step ahead so that any possible mis-haps or errors or omittances won't come back onto your family member!

If he's living in Ireland and looking for a UK Passport, he applies to the British Embassy in Dublin for it.

Thanks, it's all done online now and the passport comes from the U.K..

He has applied for it and is just waiting for it back. He thought a driving license would have been sufficient I.D .

If he prints off any proof (confirmation email from UK passport office, proof of payment) that he has that he's applied & paid for his passport he could try showing it at his local DSP office & ask them if they'll give him another temporary card. It's worth a shot.

If they refuse & he's in financial difficulty he could go to his local DSP Rep & see if he'd get Supplementary Welfare Allowance in the meantime, but he'd need ID for that also.
