Ironing fancy bedclothes?

There's probably a better forum for this but I don't want to look like a wally :p Since hearing so much on here about their virtues I've invested in some fancy Egyptian cotton bedding. The problem is it looks very creased now on the bed. Do you folks iron them beforehand or do you just let your body flatten them out?

The pillow cases in our house get ironed everytime they are washed.
Ironing bedsheets and duvet covers would be silly IMO. Wash em, hang em on the line...let nature straighten them out.

If you're chucking them in a tumble-dryer, you'll probably want to iron them. Once they're put on the line straight out of the washing machine, they'll smooth themselves out pretty quickly.

I don't even iron clothes (bar shirts which get left into the cleaners for pressing) never mind bed clothes. I was just thinking the other day I'm nearly two years in my current house and haven't used the iron once since I moved in.

Nope. Would never iron bedclothes of any sort. Life is hard enough (and time precious enough) without those kind of complications.

I iron pillowslips, and if you tumble your sheets and duvet cover and get them out as soon as the cycle ends and fold them, they don't need to be ironed.

If you don't want to tumble them dry, then line dry them until they're 80% dry and finished them off in the dryer. Or line dry them on a windy day.

    Or iron them.

I love doing laundry, but I HATE ironing.

Get 'em out of the washing machine straight away and hung up, then fold properly when they're dry - they'll be grand.

Life's too short for ironing bedclothes!

Sorry Backwards Man, I'm inclined to see ironing bedclothes as a bit backwards :P

I only got them today and gave them half and hour in the drier and put them on the bed. That's what I normally do with new sheets but these look like they need extra TLC. I'm not a fan of ironing either.

Fitted sheets with the elasticy bit are a pain to fold.http://cdn.themetapicture.com/media/funny-bed-sheets-folding-mess.jpg

Just remember to put the duvet up on top of itself in the middle of the floor and jump on it. Makes making the bed worthwhile.

I'm shocked at you nox :pac:

I usually just fold them and throw them under whatever I'm ironing, then if I'm arsed they get a quick once over at the end. The line takes care of most of it.

I bought fancy satin type bedclothes before. I melted them with an iron. I don't buy fancy bedclothes anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,065 ✭✭✭Miaireland

I just iron pillow cases. I do have a handheld ironing thing (like in some dry cleaners) and if the sheets are very wrinkled I use that. I hate ironing with a passion.

Thought you were taking the piss but looked it up and it's really a thing. :p Begs the question, what are you supposed to hold a normal iron with?

Straighten them out carefully so they lie flat while they're on the bed and the wrinkles will smooth out.

I'm tempted to take pictures of my beddy-bye to show you what I mean, but my panda bear teddy is having a nap and I don't want to invade his privacy.

If you take them straight out of the dryer when it's finished and fold them they won't crease. Or you can always invest in a steam mop and steam them while they're on the bed. Or you can just put them on the bed and if anyone mentions that the sheets are a bit wrinkly punch them in the face.

Did you wash them first? Always find it odd when people buy new bed clothes and even regular clothes and just chuck them on straight out of the packet. You've no idea where they've been, at least put them in for a quick wash first.

Na, I just give them a quick run in the drier if they are folded or in plastic, same for clothes or straight off the hanger. Once you wash them the newness is gone forever.

I iron pillowcases but never sheets or duvet covers. I never buy fitted bedlinen, it's a nightmare to fold so I always use 2 flat sheets, I like a sheet over me as well as under me.

I iron mine. Nothing feels nicer than a well made bed.

I don't iron the sheets or bed linen. The local laundry do a lovely job washing and pressing them though. They'd want to considering I splashed out the guts of €1000 euro for Italian milled Egyptian Cotton sheets and duvet cover.

Even I thought it rather excessive to be honest. Anything for a quiet life - metaphorically speaking.

Surprised you don't have your IT guys doing it for you. Maybe they're too busy teaching you how to change the radio in your 5 series.

Well considering they cannot get that dammed Citrix thing to work reliably and smoothly I doubt they'd excel in washing and pressing Egyptian cotton sheets. And considering how most of them dress coming to work I doubt they ever use an iron on their own clothes.

If I paid the guts of €1,000 for bedding, there's no way I'd send them to be cleaned by the local laundrette. I'd have a specialist cleaning company hired to maintain the bedding in it's original condition!

That said, I would never spend so much money on bedding anyway, so I can send it over to the local laundrette without pissing myself worrying that he may damage it. He's good, but I wouldn't trust anyone with €1,000 bedding! I dare not ask how do you even sleep in that!

    "Very comfortably" I imagine :D

Oh, I don't get all the ironing hate around here, I love ironing, very relaxing, nothing much more satisfying in the morning than knowing your clothes are ironed from the night before :)

They probably look fine coming from the launderette, but not so fresh under a UV lamp perhaps..

Folding fitted sheets. The easy way, though I am not sure it will translate to text.

Hold the sheet in front of you inside out, and long side up.
Put a fist in each corner of the top side, bring left one across and put it over the other - you will turn it inside out, and hook it over the other fist.

Swap fists so sheet is on your left hand, and use the right to pick up the bottom two corners, one inside the other so each hand has two layers of corner on it. Bring right fist across to left, turn the corners and hook them all over the left fist.

You now have a quartered sheet with all four corners hooked over one fist. Put your forearm across your front, fold the short side down and the long side across, then kinda slip your arm out of the sheet and fold it down a couple of times to make a tidy packet with all the edges inside.

It does work, honest, and is very quick once you have done it a couple of times.

Fcuk how to fold a fitted sheet.

How the fcuk do you put the cnuting duvet in the duvet cover without it looking like an 80 year olds sagging bollocks afterwards is what I'd like to know.

I don't iron bedsheets at all. I tumble dry them and then use Wrinkle Release spray and give them a good shake before putting them on the bed. I do iron the pillow cases though.

I climb inside the duvet cover first and then take the duvet in, spread it of to the corners, stand up on the bed and fall forward, then slip out the bottom and do the buttons ('buttocks', predictive text can be perilous sometimes :D). Then I flap it up and down a couple of times, work out the corners again, et voila :)

I only iron the bedclothes when the mother in law is coming to stay and it's just for the bedclothes in the guest room.

It's hard to manage a big duvet cover and sheets on a normal ironing board. I give up and get my husband to do it, they're his parents after all.

I always iron my bedclothes :o Not very well mind you, just a quick iron. Also never tumble dried anything in my life. Grew up in a house without a dryer (they still don't have one!) and I'm afraid it will ruin my clothes.

Wash new sheets, clothes line only, tumble dryer will ruin them. Who cares if they are wrinkled. Nothing like clean Egyptian cotton sheets.

You lay the duvet cover out, inside out. Lay the duvet on top of it then roll the whole thing up like a swiss roll from the top of the duvet cover toward the open end. Fold the open end over the roll and tuck the whole thing in, then just unroll it. My duvet is larger than my bed and it's not a problem. It's not quite as easy as if you do it the normal way, but with a king size duvet you really need two people to do that.
