Replace them every yr on the batch feeders, then use the old ones to replace any worn/damaged/torn teats on the mobile feeder. Think it's important to change on any feeders that are used for young calves

I cut off the leaking ones and push out the other ones and keep them as spares for the main season to replace any leaking ones.

Always replace all the teats at the start of the season, JFC teats for the younger ones to start on with individual compartment feeders. I put milkbar ones on group troughs for the older calves to slow down sucking and move the troughs on as each batch is weaned, just a wash out and spray with iodine and rinse out.

I find its only the older calves that bite through teats. I am thinking of pouring milk into ration troughs next year to reduce that but I'm afraid of calves drinking too much too quickly:o

Change the whole lot after two years here

I would usually replace as they leak but this year I'm thinking about cutting all of the old ones off the troughs when I put them away at the end of the season which will force me to buy all new ones next year.

what price are you paying for teats. local independent co-op charged me €32.50 for 10 of the milkbar ones. last time I bought was €30 for bag of 10

I get the screw in peach teats and they were 4.95 a piece

I find that jfc or milkbar teats are rubbish. I have a trailed feeder with manifold that can only use JFC or milkbar. It takes 2 sets to do a season. For all other gate mounted feeders, Milkbar, JFC, McKee, we use the McKee touch teat. If you wash them well at the end of the season, they will easily do 3 seasons. I dont know how much the cost, but one set in 3 seasons is surely cheaper than six sets in 3 seasons.

Never heard of McKee teats, where can you get them? Are they just pull through teats?

McKee teats are called touch teats. they have a plastic valve that opens easily when the calf starts to suck. They are pull through but can be adapted as a screw in. Mullinahone co-op import them. I have got them in my local Glanbia store.
