Any ideas on how to get your cycle partners to up the distance?
Max distance we have gone is about 76k but i still have a good bit left in the tank,
Once there's climbs involved the long distance sportive gets swapped for a shorter one, but my view is "WHY NOT GIVE IT A GO"???
Any sport ive done in the past ive always been of the opinion if it doesnt hurt you after completion you haven't given enough.

Put partner and bike in the car, drive 200km away from where you live, take away his/hers wallet, leave 2 bananas and 2 bottles of water and maybe a bar or two, drive back home, cook a dinner, get bottle of wine and a rom-com to say sorry when he/she gets back eventually. Have the hot bath ready too :)

Why not continue solo? I do that after most club rides.

I usually start early solo and then meet up with a cycling buddy along the way. This allows me to get the extras kms in and my buddy doesn't feel to disheartened. :)

The only way is to suck it up and sign up and do a big one yourself while they only do the short one on the same day.
Once you ride one , they will come on board.

When I started out the club had a handful of riders who went beyond 100km now there are groups doing them every weekend. The racing crew have to check with us for the bus now.

I suppose i must hook up with a club so!!!
Usually just me, the brother in-law and his mate, was chatting with a lad from castleknock so i might give it a go soon. Will just need my permission slip from the wife (and she thought she would get to she me more after giving up the golf ha ha)

    Lie to them.

That's what the group I head out with does.

Tell no one the route before hand.

There are still people quite upset about the hills we went up at the weekend :)

They'll get over it though. we always do.

I'd agree with the posters who have suggested
    a) Lying
    b) Doing extra miles yourself before and/or after your spin with your reluctant friends.

If you are organising the spin, lying should work, provided you pick a route that your mates are unfamiliar with. You can then pretend that you underestimated the distance as you thought it was kilometres rather than miles.

For the extra miles, I think it's easier to do this before your spin. I had a similar problem in the past with local club spins, so I just picked out a 30-40km route and would do that before meeting up with the lads. It's always a bit harder to do the extra at the end of the spin as you'll be more tired and probably be tempted by the nearness of home.
