Your Team's Season Review

Well, how did it go for you? Did they overachieve/underachieve or finish as you expected?

Man United: While reaching the goal that I said I'd be happy with from day one it was still a fairly poor season. The 2 biggest arrivals in the Summer fell flat on their faces. The football was really awful to watch for large parts but at least there looks to be an aim from the manager in how he wants the team to play.

Highlights - Herrera looks to be a very good signing, Mata's revival, Fellaini resembling a footballer again and De Gea cementing his place as one of the very best in the world.

Not so highlights - A lack of cutting edge in attack, an injury ravaged defence for the majority of the season and the performances of Di Maria and Falcao after all the preseason excitement.

    An uninspiring 6.5/10 overall.

Everton - Meh. Expected more. But with the squad Everton where always going to struggle with League/Europa, but some of our results have been horrendous.

Realistically I think the best outcome after the first few months would have been 8th. We should have finished 9th or 10th with a few games to go, but awful results.

    Will be interesting next season.

    Chelsea.

    8/10

Could have done better in the FA cup and UCL but the league cup and EPL double is a good for us.

Well hope for the same type of success next year.

Arsenal- Good, awful first half of the season with injuries and bad form really doing us over. second half we were back to our best. Plus another FA Cup Final and finishing 3rd so no qualifying for CL again is a slight step up.

Losing a easy tie in the CL last 16 was a disappointment. We're still two to three players off from having a league winning team. I'm not overjoyed cause I think Wenger messed up again in the Transfer window. But he did sign world class in Sanchez and the emergence of Bellerin and Coq is great. But the summer Transfer window Wenger must sign a top class GK, a top class DM and world class finisher up front with pace. Overall a good season that could have been better.

    Newcastle United.

Highlights: We beat Chelsea and stayed up.

    Lowlights: Everything else.

    Sunderland

Highlights - Unsurprisingly, there were very few. Beating Newcastle home and away (again) is certainly up there and the renaissance under Advocaat.

Lowlights - Almost the whole season really. Yet another long, drawn out relegation battle.

    Best Player - 1) Cattermole, 2) Pantilimon, 3) Larsson.

Worst Player - Jack Rodwell has been especially atrocious. £10m and he looks like a bloke who has no interest in playing football. Constantly hiding on the pitch. He appears to be such a cowardly footballer. The flop of the whole Premier League season for me.

Expectations for Next Season - A boring, comfortable, mid-table season would make a refreshing change. Surely that's not too much to ask.

    Liverpool:
Failed to reach goal of top four after miserable first and final thirds to the season. Streak between the two losses to Man Utd were the only sliver of hope given. Might have been very different had the second back to back against Man Utd and Arsenal gone differently. One point from West Brom and Hull games at end of April ended what little chance of fourth there was despite teams above stuttering.
Summer signings failing to offer anything near the player(s) they were replacing.

Downgrade from last season's heroics expected after some departures (and unfortunately arrivals), but not quite as poor as it was. Final stretch will probably cost Rodgers his job.

    Highlights:
The 3-0 win over Spurs in August, closest we got to previous season's performances.
Home win versus Man City, gritty and hard fought, always nice beating the champions.
3-2 at QPR. Three goals (two OGs) in injury time to jam a win in the 95th minute.

    Not so highlights:
Throwing away two goal lead at home to Leicester.
    4-1 loss to Arsenal.
Swept aside by Palace in Gerrard's final game at Anfield.
KO'd by Stoke in Gerrard's final game.

    3.5/10

    Hamburg

    Highlights

Lowlights - Everything. Special mention for the 8-0 loss to Bayern.

Best Player - Going to have to say Gojko Kacar for his performances when he came back into the team for the last 5 games. 3 goals in 5 games from DM and great all round play. Fantastic.

Worst player - 1) van der Vaart 2) Nicolai Müller. €4.5m wasted.
Julian Green is probably the worst footballer at the club, but he only played about 60 minutes this season.

Expectations - Survive the relegation playoff on Thursday and Monday and then a safe spot somewhere from 9th - 12th next season.

2/10 because of the character shown in recent weeks.

0/10 if we lose in the relegation playoff against Karlsruhe.

    Middlesbrough

Highlights - Making the playoffs after missing out on them for the last few seasons. Our very good defensive record.

Lowlights - The away losses at the end of the season to Bournemouth and Watford that condemned us to the playoffs. Also the loss at home to Leeds as we were flying and on a very good run and that result was very unexpected. Our attacking returns have not been great either.

    Best Player - Bamford

Expectations for Next Season - It all depends on tomorrow

    Feyenoord

Appointed an manager well known for ****ing up the last 1/4 of a season at his previous clubs
And oh christ, did he deliver.

5 matches from the end, a single win was needed to finish 3rd and qualify for Europe
It all went tits up with 3 losses and 2 draws which meant plays off for EL qualification.
And that was done and dusted this afternoon when they went out in ET against Heerenveen.

Europe was ok. For the 1st time basically since winning the UEFA cup in 2002, i actually enjoyed a few matches again as the usual draws against nobodies in Eastern Europe, financed by some dodgy money, stayed away this time and matches against Sevilla, St Liege and Rijeka were actually fun to watch with te win vs Sevilla at home the high light. Not too many teams can say they have beaten Sevilla in the EL in recent years.

Thank **** for getting rid of Rutten and appointing a real Feyenoord man as the manager for next season, Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Dirk Kuyt will be back too.

Just fear we have seen the last of Jordy Clasie this afternoon for Feyenoord. Hope he chooses wisely as it comes to a new club.

5/10 for the season. Would be 3/10 if it wasnt for the run in Europe

    Manchester City

    5/10
Surrendered the league very meekly in the Jan-Mar period.
Dismal performances in both domestic cups
No real sign of cracking our annual CL woes.
Too many poor results (only 9 out of 18 points won against the three relegated sides for example)
Too prone to struggle against bus parkers, with no plan B
A manager who seems joined at the hip with 4-4-bloody 2
Too many of our top notch players underperforming for large chunks of the season; stand up Vinnie, Pablo and Samir in particular.

Apart from that, it's been a great season!

    Northampton Town

    6/10

After fighting relegation on and off for last few seasons mid table was OK.

Low point was run leading up to Christmas, dreadful and really threw away a decent, solid start. The stalled East Stand redevelopment was also frustrating, won't even be open in time for next season now, and still no firm design or word whether there will be seats with restricted view, in a new stand, in 2015. Oh and this season they added throwing away loads of points on last minutes of games to their repertoire.

High point was run for first couple of months of the new year, unbeaten, playing attractive football that had us close to the play offs but with just too much to do.

Also got to bring my kids over to see them play a couple of times, their first ever live games. I caught 3 games won one, lost two. About what I would expect!

Expectations? As usual in lower league football, the squad has been decimated again by letting players move on and listing others. Only 12 players on the books at the moment, including some really exciting, skilful players, so would be nice to see them sign the steel to back it up.

This is all Wilder's team now, so play off push should be minimum expectation.

    Liverpool:
Our goal was to get top 4 when realistically we had the fifth best squad in the league. The season started and ended poorly but we did perform well mid season. The losses to Arsenal and Man United towards the end of the season really put the brakes on the top 4 challenge and we never recovered from there. We probably should have finished 5th and should have wrapped that up. We really miss not having a 2nd great striker and with Sturridge bearly playing any of the season we really struggled up top. The players who came in didn't perform anywhere near expected but they need to be given another year to see how they get on.

Last year was a deviation from the norm and we really struggled with the expectation put on us from last year and hopefully next season we can mount a serious challenge for the top 4.

    The Good
The stretch between the two united losses where we were the in form team of the premiership which shows to me that we have the players there to do this. It just crumbled
Coutinho looked great this season and really stood out in a team where so many players under performed.

    The Bad
The losses to Arsenal and United which ended the top 4 campaign

    The Ugly
Throwing in the towel towards the end of the season with Stoke and Palace in particular being two terrible performances.

    Outlook
Hopefully some of the players who we bought start to actually deliver to their potential next year. Gerrard will be a loss for the team spirit but for his playing ability he won't be missed. Hopefully him leaving will mean some of the young characters in the team will step up and we'll have a more team spirit who'll save the day instead of just Gerrard brilliance. I'm hoping for a top 4 next season but in reality we'll spend less than Man United and we're quite far behind the rest and a fifth place which is the norm should be expected.

Good post Noel, a fair assessment of the campaign for Liverpool. I'm finding a lot of Pool fans are going to extremes in both directions but that's a very balanced view.

    Leeds United

    The Highlights
Few and far between, but the emergence of a number of excellent young players, most notably Lewis cook and Alex Mowatt, provided a small amount of pleasure to the long suffering fans.

    The Lowlights
Absolutely everything else. 5 different managers in the last calendar year gives an indication of what a mess the club is in. Between managerial changes, some completely useless loan signings to pad out an under-strength squad, the chairman's increasingly frequent brushes with both the law and the FA, the former MD languishing for months in a Dubai jail at the behest of the current minority shareholders (and past owners), a director who has had a hand in all sorts of shady dealings involving the current and past owners, the assistant manager being relieved of his duties in still unexplained circumstances and half a dozen loan players suddenly getting "injured" before the third last game of the season, even by Leeds standards this has been an eventful season. However if there was ever a season to forget, this is it, although next season could be just as bad as long as Massimo Cellino still owns the club.

    A completely shambolic 1/10.

    United.

On balance about 40% good and 60% shyte.

No cup runs, in the main woefully inconsistent in the league barring our streak in the spring.

Limped to 4th place with a possible sticky qualifier to come.

    The bad.

Falcao was very disappointing, DiMaria despite a good start was poor, injuries continue to be a big issue.

    The good.

DDG of course, Fellaini had some excellent performances, Shaw showed flashes of brilliance and I think Herrara is going to be a cracking player for us in the long term.

Overall happy enough and we are just about deserving of 4th. Big summer ahead with a lot of exits and additions.

However despite all that if someone had offered me 4th place this time last year I would have taken their hand off so in pretty content with the turnaround.

    Liverpool

Good - the run from Dec to March, showing that we can play with confidence and dominate teams, every without a top class striker on the pitch. Coutinho is developing well, but need to be supported by a ball-busting CM to win the ball, and a top class striker to convert chances.
Bad - Rodgers insistence on playing players out of position, as if to prove a point. Ibe, Sterling, Lallana, Can, Stevie, and more besides. Ignoring fit strikers and full backs in the process. Too stubborn for his own good, too cock-sure.
Our inability to match the other big teams, making it look like Suarez was the ONLY reason we managed that last year.
High Point - Hmm...having a good run that kept us Top 6?
Low Point - Semi defeat to Villa. No fight, no quality, looked as if they could care less.

    Liverpool:
Very very dissapointing. If I could sum it up in two words I would say "Missed Oportunities". I said that we would finish 5th at the end of the summer and we finished 6th. The numbers dont really matter, when you dig deeper you see what a bad summer we had and how naiive we are as a club. I could take fifth if we actually fought but there is no fight anymore. Players gave up on so many occaisions throughout the season.

    Highlights
    It's over.
Was great to be back in the Champions League (albeit for only a short time).
    Good run after Christmas.

    Lowlights
    *Deep breath*
Abysmal in Europe. So so bad. 2nd string against Madrid (they actually did well tbf)...seemed to give up again.
Stupid formations, players constantly out of position, tactical ineptitute. Not getting the best of the players the club signed.
    Bad signings.
Weak weak weak players. Heads dropped after losses against Man United and Arsenal despite the fact there was still lots to play for.
Semi final against Aston Villa. Again, players and manager not giving it their all.

    Manchester United

It was a crap season, and bar a 4 game stretch our performances were sub-standard all year. Some of the performances this season were every bit as bad as the worst days under David Moyes, and its very worrying that they were not really any better in May than they were in November.

A lot of money spent and with no European football we had the time to work with the squad and implement a style of play, but you wouldn't know that from watching the games. Its telling that now the talk is that things will be better next season, the improvements in our play always seem to be in the future.

LVG has had a very poor season, marked by baffling tactical choices and a failure to use the tools at his disposal. Yes he got 4th, but thats a minimum requirement considering the assets at his disposal. 5/10.

    Lowlights

The Southampton game was the worst performance by a United side that I have ever seen, it was a disgrace and we were utterly blessed to get a result that day. The first Arsenal game was barely better. The 2nd half of the Arsenal cup game was a real disappointment, because we had been doing so well in the first half and then Van Gaal decided to do a tinkerman.

Other lowlights include the failure to perform of so many proven world class players, and ongoing brittleness of the squad. The physios must be on commission at this stage.

    Highlights

That we won so many games despite playing ****e, we cannot underestimate how important that is. We also stepped up in all the big games, and showed that we are actually good enough to compete against rival teams. De Gea proved yet again that he is a genuinely world class player. Herrera was a shining light when LVG finally decided to let him play. Smalling got a run and showed that he does in fact have the ability to do well.

    Coventry city

High points, moving back to the ricoh. Albeit now owned by a Rugby club. well at least half of it. Just about staying up. Appointment of Mowbary who i was excited about.

    Low points.
The amount of players who simply did not preform, Tudgay, Pugh, Barton, Webster, Turgott the list goes on.

Still being owned by a bunch of cowboys. Being in a relegation Fight.

Best player: john fleck(best of bad bunch)

Next season. High Hopes with Mowbary in charge and cant get that much worse.

    2/10

    Liverpool

    Highlights
    1. Beating City thanks to wonder goals from Hendo and Coutinho
    2. The 3-0 hammering of Tottenham
    3. The win at Southampton
    4. Coutinho's goal at Bolton
    5. Being at Anfield to see Stevie G's last goal at the hallowed ground v QPR

    Lowlights
    1. 6-1 at Stoke
    2. The FA Cup surrender to Villa
    3. Defeats to the Mancs and Stevie G's red card
    4. The hammering at the Emirates
    5. The defeats to Palace
    6. Going out of the Champions League
    7. The wretched display at Newcastle
    8. Balotelli's miss at QPR
    9. Giving away a 2-0 lead at home to Leicester when they were bottom
    10. Sterling acting the muppet
    11. Lovren's penalty miss in Istanbul

Best Player - Coutinho all day long. A magician and a scorer of amazing goals. Has had the occasional quiet game but overall he was often the one shining light in a mundane team.

Worst player - Plenty to choose from but Balotelli topped them all. Disgraceful attitude and not even that good, although he did nab vital goals against Ludogorets and Spurs. The fact that I can recall them so easily, though, sums up how little he contributed. A total disaster.

Expectations - Try not to get worse next season.

Marks for this season - 2/10

If I had to sum up Liverpools season in a picture, this is it
    Balotelli-1.jpg

Mario Balotelli shaving the Liverbird onto his head. All talk and bluster and symbolism but absolute nothing to justify it. We had a good run (between the utd games) but we were woeful in any and all important games, FA cup semi, Champions League games, any team in the top 4.
Terrible signings and very little hope that many of them will get better. I think Markovic can be good and same with Lallana but I'm so unsure about anyone else.

Lowest point by leaps and bounds - Gerrard against Utd. just....
    High point.... Coutinho I suppose

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭Drexel

Arsenal Good to very good (if we win the cup). Finished in the top 4 as expected. Was disappointed not to finish 2nd but 3rd isnt 4th so its an improvement and no dodgy CL qualifier to contend with

Highlights Sanchez tearing up the league. The emergence of Bellerin and le Coq. Playing a nice counter attacking game to beat city. Fa cup final (if we win)

Lowlights Losing that game to Monaco. Was a terrible result. The start of our season was a complete disaster. Dont think we could have caught Chelsea at all but we should have pushed them closer. The Fa cup final (if we lose)

I am goina add a new category

needs for next season Others will disagree but if we can get Cech it will be a huge upgrade on what we have. Same with a striker to replace Giroud. But I dunno who we could get. Maybe not a straight replacement for him but a goalscoring forward is def needed. An improvement on Coq would be nice but Id be more than willing to give him that spot for next season. Some direct competition maybe. Arteta is finished I think
