Are referenda counted by constituency or total votes?

Never actually thought of asking this before. I've always assumed referenda in Ireland are counted by the total number of yes votes versus the total number of no votes nationwide, and that the media reporting constituency by constituency was just for convenience in individual counts.

Am I correct about this, or is it in fact more like a US election in which the end result will be the number of constituencies with a yes majority vs the number with a no majority, so that the nationwide popular vote could favour a referendum but it could still be rejected by not winning enough constituencies?

Probably a silly question, I ask only because everyone seems to be talking about "X out of 43 have said yes" rather than "x% of the nationwide votes so far have said yes".

    Total population vote

Thought so. So the constituency-by-constituency reporting in the media is just for convenience then?

Each constituency counts their votes and sends the results onto the central count centre.
So the results come in "constituency wise" and for the want of filling airtime, people talk overly much about how constituencies voted.
