They may give it to you for free when you check in at the centre, but generally the rule is the test is free if it falls 28 or more days after you look for it, unless you accept the late test. Thing is they consider not asking about the free test as a tacit acceptance

Got mine free today. Didn't ask for it. She just said 'no charge'.

Outside the 28 days window by three weeks.

Did you call them up at all for ? I never got my test for free and the only date available at the time was about an 7/8 week wait. I e-mailed them but never heard anything back or even an acknowledgement they got my e-mail.

I waited 7 weeks for a test (from the date I phoned for an appointment). Was charged the 55 Euro fee as receptionist said "no mention of free test on computer". I did get a refund after I complained. The test was in January.

How did you complain ? Via telephone for email?

I think I will ring them tomorrow.

I emailed them. It is too easy to get the run around with a phone call. With email you have a dated copy of your correspondence.

I called them on the day of expiry. She went through the various centres around Dublin, checking availability. She found one within the four weeks, but quickly said that I wouldn't want that as it was in the middle of the night on the far side of the city. I agreed that it wasn't ideal. She then put me on the priority list.

Got a text confirming an appointment a few weeks later in my nearest centre, but well outside the four week period. I didn't think I'd get it for free, as I thought that they'd technically count the mention of the 2am slot as a relevant offer within the four weeks. Had my card out to pay yesterday, and they say there's no charge.

    Again, fair play!

Edit: rang 31 March, got appointment by text on 30 April for 23 May. 2am possibility was for something like 12 or 13 April.

For the record on the day , there was no mention of the charge ..so whilst not getting a test sooner was annoying..saving 55 euro was worth it!

If these free tests catch on they'll have to put the price up!

You can refuse the first two appointments offered to you....and still be entitled to a free Test if they cannot test your car within four weeks of you phoning them.
