Helmet size/fit.

I've been in the LBS today to try and fit few helmets. So I tried two size Medium and Large. They both fit me. Medium did fit although there was maybe 20% room for adjustment comparing to what the Large size offered. To put it in simpler way I had the adjustment mechanism maxed out to the biggest setting when I tried Medium it fit ok, can't say it was snug fit or tight it was fairly secure before adjusting the mechanism or using the strap. Not sure if I could fit a hat in winter tho. The Large sized helmet before tightening fit ma like a big bowl, then obviously once tightened it was ok, it offered plenty of extra room and ridiculous look. So which size is best and how do I determine that ?

Try a different brand, doesn't sound like either of those are suitable

My head is 57.5 and I wear a medium which is rated from 54-58 on both my helmets. They fit me perfect even with a cap on. A large

Bring a cap with you next time and try them on with it on, most caps don't add a huge deal to your head circumference

what do you consider a hat? a normal hat/cap or a cycling hat?most cycling headwear for winter and summer isnt very thick material

I have gore winter cap/hat which ads a bit.

I would have thought that a medium and large of the same brand shouldn't really look any different externally??

Yeah I guess, just somewhat bigger on the outside.

Extra Toad effect, as the whole helmet is scaled up inside and out. If the head it's on is the same size, then the large is always going to look oversized by comparison.
