Hi I'm travelling to America for the first time on a j1, I haven't been on a flight for a good 4 years . I'm on united 24 it departs at 9:05 am from shannon airport, I'm just wondering what time should I be at the airport to checkin at ? Thanks !

Check-in is usually open from two hours before a flight's departure, give yourself plenty of time (half an hour before this) just in case. Enjoy your J1!
