I wanted to get my 17 yr old driving so I bought him a 04 opel corsa. My insurance policy is with them so they said to send off the proposal form. They rang today to say they can't insure the car with no valid reason. They said it could be the year, model or make. Has anyone else heard of this. The car is 11 years old and has just passed the NCT

Would your own policy not be on your car? You'd be adding him as a named driver on that car, not a seperate car. Insuring his own car under your name and adding him as a named driver is called fronting and something insurance companies are clamping down on.

Its the actual car they won't insure, no matter who!!! They won't give a reason only the make model or year. It's a new thing that they brought out only 4 weeks ago. Extremely frustrating because I've got a 141 car that has electronic handbrake and thought it wouldn't be suitable for a first time driver. I heard that you can have another policy on another car which is why I bought a small one to start for him! I thought once it passes an NCT that it is roadworthy no matter what age year or model!

Its possible you have bought a bogey car Im afraid.

Alot of the larger insurers are tied in with Cartell so if a car was deemed a write off, involved in an MIBI case etc and the agent enters the reg it brings up the information and that could be the reason why they wont quote.

Best bet is to do a Cartell check yourself and see what it throws up.

Id be interested to hear if anything does come up because other than that, there is no reason why they would refuse to quote the car. If they declined a quote based on it been for a 17 year old then fair enough but blaming the car itself is a new one on me.

Unless its been modified of course - lowered suspension etc.

Pretty much any non cosmetic mods are a problem for insurers.

You have the right to go down the route of going through the declined cases committee. It basically means that if 3 insurers refuse to quote you can request an official letter of declinature from all 3, present them to the committee and they will instruct (usually the first one) a company to quote.

Of course they can quote and pretty much charge you what they want so it may not be realistic to do that either.

    Have you tried another insurer?

They won't insure young inexperienced drivers in their own cars anymore. Had the same with them yesterday. Tried to insure my young lad in a little Fiesta. Point blank refused on age grounds, but they will insure him in my car,a 2.0 for 6 months for free:) if I take out driving lessons from them.
One company quoted 6800 and Liberty wouldn't quote because it would have exceeded 6k

Trying to get insured as a young person is a nightmare.

Went to go get insured on a Corolla 1.4vvti last year (17yo, male, student) - cheapest quote I got was €5,500!!

But the insurance company had no issue on putting me as an additional driver on my parents car, a Ford Mondeo 1.8tdci which I have 90% of the time, for an extra €700. And they put me on my fathers jeep, a Hyundai Santa Fe, for free as he already had a policy with the same company!!

I shouldnt be complaining, Im insured on a Mondeo and a Santa Fe for €700 :pac:

Aviva have an Ignition Test, if you do that they'll insure young drivers, I did it.

Be careful as you may end up complaining a lot if you have a claim for any reason...its called fronting and insurance companies do watch for it...(on the mondeo I mean)

Still regarded as my parents car. They both still drive it, but over the past year I've found that Im driving it more than them as my father has his own motor policy for the Santa Fe so they tend to drive that more. Therefore, leaving me with the Mondeo to drive to work, school, any trips etc.

You would think it would be easier being 25, first time driver but I'm getting quoted around €2000 from every insurance company I've looked into. Except some company called BoxyMo? Car I'm thinking of buying is not even worth 1k...

I'm 25 full license 6 years with 7 years no claims on policies in my name and my renewal came in this morning for 1700e :D

My sister just turned 27 and her insurance is 400 with some company in Galway. I thought they stopped the sexist crap. She's also on a provisional...
