New car or pre reg?! How much room for haggling with new cars?

    Hi all,

I'm starting to look at new cars and am considering the pros and cons between ordering brand new from dealers (ie waiting for 152) and ordering a pre-reg 151 with no miles.
There don't seem to be too many pre reg cars out there at the moment but I did find one that is going to be approx €2500 cheaper than the RRP advertised for ordering the brand new model (depending on how much I can haggle with them but to be honest I'm not expecting him to budge much as he has said it's the rock bottom price).
I'm wondering is this really a good deal? Or would you expect the brand new car ordered for 152 to have some haggle room anyway? I've read online guides suggesting you can get 10% off which would bring me down to the price of the pre reg anyway but what I want to know is is this actually realistic?! I'm very new to this whole area so I've no clue as to what's normal for buying a new car..... God if only dealers could just have an absolute rock bottom price that they advertise... Haggling makes it much more difficult to gauge for newbies like me!!!

I can't it being way less than rock bottom on a new one.
You need to shop the country and find out the cheapest you'll get a new one for. RRP is only a starting point.

Jaysus, 10% is way too much of a discount, usually 3% or 4% is more accurate. If you like the colour and spec of the pre-reg car then just go for it. Saving at least €2.5k and not having to wait 6 weeks or more for your new car is pretty decent.

What kind of car is it?

Yes but your not necessarily getting colour or spec choice from what you would have ordered if you decided to order the car new, the car also has an additional owner even if you try explaning it at trade in time or not. I would want atleast an 8-10% discount to consider it.

Wow thanks for the quick replies guys! The price for the pre reg car is approx 11% less than the RRP and I'm happy with colour spec etc... What I'm wondering really is if this really is a genuine 11% discount or if I went down the road of getting a brand new 152 would I actually be able to haggle a similar discount anyway? .... Sounds as though I probably wouldn't so that sways me back towards the pre-reg (although the main negative being that I will be registered as second owner technically)

Yeah. You wouldn't be able to haggle 11% off the new car or anywhere near as the dealer will be making no money. If you're there to do a deal on the pre reg I'm sure they will do a little something on the price for you.

The last car I bought: I got 4 k off 28 k in Feb 2010. Brand new, cash deal, recent model.

    What model?

Available discount to dealers ranges from about 6 percent at the bottom end of the scale up to the late 20's at the top end, and can vary month to month and quarter to quarter.

Skoda superb aambition 1.9 tdi. List price was 28 and change, I paid 24 and change. Phoenix motors who I think are no longer a main dealer.

Whatever the saving of buying the 151, the depreciation on the 152 by December 31st will be nigh on the same. Comes down to whether you want to take the depreciation hit now or then. If you are happy with the 151 car, I'd take it and haggle hard. Swings and roundabouts, you never make a 'saving' in the car game, it's just down to how long before you lose on the depreciation.

Not a hope in hell of 10% discount on a new car, where ever you read that it's completely rubbish. Expect an absolute max of 2 or 3% on a €30k plus car.

Nonsense. As ROR said it varies and you'd be shocked at some of the deals that are available.

    It's not nonsense.

10%+ discounts on new cars are not common. Dealers generally don't have ridiculous margins (and in the case of something like a Range Rover where there is, due to supply and demand they don't need to discount much), if a dealer is giving a mega discount they are either looking to get shot of a particular car or they desperately need to get their numbers up.

I purchased a car pre reg in 2002 and was told by dealer I'd be first owner and this was the case in the documents. Has it changed since?

I didn't say they were. I was replying to another poster who said 2 or 3% on a €30k car was tops.

It depends on the car / brand. If it's a high volume seller shopping trolley (most Renaults for example), then the discount will probably be significant.
Not so good though for cars that are in strong demand / short supply.
