I got my provisional 4 years ago and never did anything with it so it went out of date and I renewed it last year. I got my first provisional before the 12 lessons thing came in but because I let my license run out will I still have to do all 12?

    Thanks in advance

When precisely did you get your first learner permit?

If it was issued before April 4th 2011, you do not have to do the 12 EDT lessons.

If it was issued after April 4th 2011, you do have to do the 12 EDT lessons.

If you can't remember the precise issue date, give the RSA a ring and they can look it up for you.

It doesn't matter if you let your learner permit expire. It only matters if you let it expire for 5 years or more.

I think you most likely will have to do at least 12 lessons yes. The reason being to be able to do the driving test you have to have shown that you got at least some lessons first of an instructor and and a letter thats signed by that instructor as far as I know. I could be wrong do.
Either way doing some more lessons is no harm there is always something new that you can learn.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Sorry, but that is 100% incorrect. If the OP meets the April 2011 date criteria, he does not have to do any mandatory lessons and he certainly doesn't need any letters signed by anyone.

Lucky you. Looks like you made it in under the wire there. It can't hurt to get some lessons from a trained professional. The odds of you passing the test at the first attempt, are probably better if you do. But its entirely up to you, whether you get them or not.

Ya my luck was really in on that one. First time I've had a bit of disposable cash in my life too so really hoping to get on the road.
I'm definitely planning in getting some lessons before doing my test. Is there still a massive back log on applications?

The wait is 8-12 weeks, depending on where you apply to do the test. The RSA's website have a listing of the average wait times at each test centre.

Passed my theory test March 28th and got the permit on the 29th :P

Also, passed my full license test before the novice plates thing. Lovely. :)

It's definitely good to take a lesson or two. I took a lesson a day before the test and the tester told me I have about 13 bad habits or so. I asked him if he thinks I would pass, his facial reaction pretty much said no and he just said if I could get rid of the 13 bad habits in a day, then I'll pass. Called him the next day saying I passed :P

It's good to know exactly what you're doing wrong and correcting them rather than waiting for another test schedule when you fail ;)

You got lucky with that even though the N plate rules don't see to be enforced so far, I think I've seen only 6/7 cars with them up since it came in. Let's hope it's abolished so I won't need them for two years :P

I believe the test are for your own good, apart from the confidence boost, you learn thing when preparing for it.
