Hi folks. I got great advice here over a while back when I was building my own pc and now my 8 year old son wants one for minecraft, youtube etc. I'd like to have 8gb memory but I'm stuck as to which processor I3, I5 etc would give best value for money and future proof it for at least a few years. Don't think there is a need for a SSD. Thanks.

1. What is your budget? €450.

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming for 8 yr old (minecraft etc. for now), browsing, youtube etc.

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes.

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Have a graphics card.

5. Do you need a monitor? No.

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Wireless keyboard + mouse.

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No.

8. How can you pay? Card, transfer, paypal etc.

9. When are you purchasing? ASAP

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Should be ok.

Not sure - i'll need to check when I get home. Its an nvidia grahics card, - a number of years old but it should do for a year or so (hopefully).

You could then get a copy of windows off reddit for less than €20 and PC World/Currys do the wireless microsoft Keyboard and Mouse for around €25

Thats bringing you up to €350 odd. You could use the extra 100 and pickup the GTX 750Ti as per above.

Thanks for that. Assuming that the graphics card is ok for now and he can upgrade it in a year or two if he starts on games requiring more, what can we get for the extra 100 in terms of the cpu? The budget would be around 175 by my calcs.

Go with my build and an i5 4460 for €185, overkill for the GPU you likely have or the 750Ti, but it'll run any AAA no bother for the next 3-4 years, and even after that it won't be an issue for another few years with lowered settings

Thanks for all your help (everyone). I think i'll give the i5 a go. The graphics card i have is the MSI M452-9502 GeForce 9500 GT. Its old and only 512mb but I think it will do him until he tries to run the more hungry games. Thanks again.
