First car – insurance costs

    Hi there,

I hope to buy my first car this summer but after looking for insurance quotes I might not be able to. The car I was thinking of buying is a 2000 Toyota Corolla (cost €1200) but after putting my details into various insurance websites the lowest quote I could fine was €1400. Is that normal? I’ve no experience of buying car insurance but that strikes me as high.

    These are my vital stats:
    • 38 y/o
    • Full licence for 4 years
    • Named driver for 4 years
    • Drove a work van for 4 years on their insurance
    • No penalty points, no accidents, no claims against me, no parking tickets
    • I don’t intend to use my car for commuting, just weekend stuff; shopping, trips away etc
    • Car will be parked in a drive way
    • My house is in Dublin 12

Is 1400 the lowest I can expect for my first year? Or is an oldish Corolla a bad first car?

    Thanks.

For a first car insurance is usually very high.
Try the usual online companies: chill.ie, nononsese, britton, 25plus, aig, etc
Hopefully you'll get that 1400 down a little.
Tbh it can differ a lot between companies. I have been quoted 1000 from one and 400 from another so it pays to try as many companies as possible.

I would have thought you should be easily able to get it below 1000...ring around to a few brokers and see what happens is your best bet.

And just fyi, the car being "old" might work against you here. As insurers are afraid of 15 year old cars.

Just ran the same numbers through First Ireland and it came back with €400. Much more civilised!

That gives me something to take to other companies if I go for this car.

That sounds impossibly cheap for a zero NCB. Ring them and I'm sure you'll get a higher price.

    My daughter.

    Boxymo.ie (based in NI).

Yeah, it definitely sounded very cheap when the first quotes I got were almost €1000 more expensive. But I've double-checked all the details I entered (selected company car: No and previous driving record as 4 years named on my mothers policy) and it comes out the same. Total price €450, not the €400 I posted above - typo from me there.

    I'll give them a call.

Not uncommon for online quotations to be "mispriced" unfortunately. Gangsters. Do let us know how you get on.

On a side note, my fathers renewal was up last week. In his 70s. 1.6 focus. €360 last year - 3rd Party. With FBD for years. No recorded claims in over 40yrs. No points. I'm authorised to deal on my parents behalf for all policies & utility negotiations. 70% increase up to €612. Asked could they better that. Kindly agreed to drop it to €600 even. " Great", I replied. "That's only a 66% increase". Across the board increases to cover claims was cited as the reason. Absolute bolox of a quote. Went to First Ireland and got if for €395.

After more internet quotes and a few phone calls I got a quote of €415 from First Ireland and went with that. That’s third party F +T, not fully comp. But I’m happy with that number.

    Great quote!

Can't believe it really! Fair play!

It just shows that you really need to shop around between the different websites and make a few calls in order to get the best price.
    Nice one OP.

I'm paying 200 more than that with 2 years NCB and a newer car.
