I am in a similar position.

I have created a new type of food. I am not sure how or if I can patent it or not.

Does a patent not prevent this?

Working prototype - patent - either fund it yourself by taking out a loan and keeping all equity (for now, at least) or find partners and investors that'll help and fund it for % of equity - find cheapest means of mass production - marketing and launch plan - ??? - profit

You could probably get some NDAs to hold you over until you manage to get a patent. Don't rush things, unless you've already found possible competitors in the same market...then you should rush lol, or else hold off and see how they get on with theirs and then do it better through marketing it better.

Not to sound harsh here, but if you're posting on boards asking this then I think you have a very long and stressful road ahead of you lmao. Just remember, be prepared for your product and business to fail so that if it does you know to assess what went wrong, where and how you can learn from it so you can do better the next time. Most people's businesses fail a few times but don't let it deter you, it can honestly be a case of throwing as much sh!t at a wall and seeing what sticks - unless you have an absolute game changing product.

^^ This is why people lose all their money on what they think is a good idea.

Investigate market, business plan, prototype, patent.

I'd have hundreds of these such ideas, wide market research and deep feasibility analysis is the best starting point and it's free, and would back up the biz plan when it's time. Easy finance and solid IP is the hard part. Would need spare $2m for my potential worldwide cash cow.

A simple SWOT or risk brainstorm session would throw up any potential stumbling blocks - that Dragons could shoot it down with.
e.g. H&S, legal, easy replication or other contextual risks. A bulletproof proposition with the offer of wheelbarrows of dollars is the only thing that would get folks on board these days.

Similar to above but in different sequence:
    1. Investigate market
    2. Feasibility/Risk Analysis
    3. Rapid Prototype
    4. Business plan
    5. Working pre-Final Prototype
    6. Prepare patent
    7. Brand creation, pre-launch marketing-mix
    8. NDA Investor sessions
    9. ...Swiftly followed with filed patent(s) if feedback positive
    10. Production, Marketing, Sales, Distribution, After Sales etc cycles..

On the plus side, nearly 10% of businesses can succeed, so there's a good 1/10 chance already ;)

If you word it well then yes. Of course china doesn't give one fiddlers fart about patents so not in China.

Send me your patent application, I'll have a quick read over it, and then send it on for you.

First step is a proper google search. I know a guy who has "new" inventions every second week, many I have heard of before, if I have not seen it already on sale I would usually have bet it already does exist, there is the rare one I am not 99% sure already exists but when I search they all did.

It can be hard to search for stuff as you might have names already in your head about how to describe it, while others might use very similar wording.
