Have 13500 to spend. Want to get one of the above no more then 4 years old i.e 2011 reg. Only want the car for short 26km round commute 2-3 days a week and for use at the weekends for a short spin here and there. Aiming for a 1.4 litre engine or 1.2 (turbo edition in the golf) to keep insurance to a minimum and because I wont be logging big miles. Which one would you go for?

Probably the civic, the golf would be better to drive though. Even the basic 1.2 has a nice dollop of power that the civic misses.

Thanks Colm_McM. In terms of VFM I heard that the VW Golfs are overpriced in that the have a reputable brand and are very popular but like Audis you pay a premium price so to speak However from reading reviews online the Civic is supposed to be a very reliable car aswell and the resale value is good. Decisions decisions:confused: And one more thing if buying from a dealer in cash how much can you bargain down on average from the advertised price. If say a car is advertised at €14000. Would offering €13000 be laughed at or would you have to got to at least €13500 for them to take your offer seriously. My last car was purchased privately but this was about 6 years ago so If anyone has any advice on how much to bargain down on average it would be appreciated. Thanks

Resale value = expensive second hand

This is a car I would be very interested in. Do you reckon I could bargain it down to €14000 in cash (or bank draft;))? It seems to be priced a bit higher then results I found for the same car elsewhere on Carzone or Car buyers guide.,ie

Seems pricey enough considering this newer shape and a year younger is only asking €1k more:
