Have you driven it yet? You might not like how unbelievably slow they are.

GT and 80bhp in the same sentence. :)

People like to get uptight about this but it's just a trim level at the end of the day.

If you are in the market for a 1.4 hatchback there are few more likeable options than a GT spec Mk5 IMO. They hold their value well, they look good, they have a decent spec, they drive well and they are generally reliable.

Didn't the initial MkV GT only come with the 1.4 TSi engines as sort of a warm GTi? They then introduced the GT Sport as a trim level to replace the Sportline?

Exactly yes. Initially the GT was either 1.4TSI or 2.0TDI 170bhp. Then as you say GT Sport became a trim level replacing Sportline. I don't see the issue tbh. No different to a 520D M-Sport. In both cases the entry level engine with nice trim package combination appeals to a lot of people.

I reckon a Corolla Luna 07 would be similar in spirit, if not as outright "shporty"
1.4 hatch with skirts, alloys, better seats etc.
I can see why someone would want a golf gt as they look more expensive/high spec than they are

Those Corollas are ok but if it was my money I'd have the VW any day of the week. It's just a much nicer car IMO.

I have drove mk5 1.4 before and shudnt say the extra 5bhp in the gt is gna make any difference. There reliable yes but still a bag to drive. truth be told its for the misses but im thinking mney wise holding its value til she wants rid. All be it that the Gt really is just trim level. They do look alot nicer than bog standard 1.4. What under the bonnet should i be looking out for besides the obvious e.g oil leaks etc. Thanks people for the comments

I like the Audi "sport ambition" models. At least that's honest.
Just call it glx rather than gt if it's a trim level with zero sporty / grand touring credibility.
Or the irish market special "Sport Notions"...

If it's got no service book, I wouldn't even consider it.
