Does anyone have a 6D and can you share your thoughts? I've had a 600D now for many many years and I think its time to move to Full Frame. I have a Canon 24-105mm F4 and a 70-200mm F4. I used to have more lenses but got rid of them - saving the money for a new body. The problems I always find myself having is the 24mm is not wide enough - which should be solved with full frame. I also found the high iso performance terrible - I believe the 6D is excellent. I dont want a 5D as its more than I need probably and its huge too, I like a more compact camera.

I was looking for a used one but they still seem to go for mad money 2nd hand. There are two on adverts looking for €1,200, you can get a new one here for just under €1,300. http://www.ebay.ie/itm/NEW-Canon-EOS-6D-20-2MP-Digital-SLR-Camera-Body-In-UK-3-Year-Warranty-Included-/130922270130?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1e7b934db2

The 6D is a 5D MkIII without the bells and whistles. Most importantly, it has the same sensor as the 5D MkIII and is significantly better at low-noise than the 600D/60D/7D and is better than the new 70D.

Main bells and whistles missing are the focusing system (9 vs 63), only 1 SD card and a few other items. On the other hand it has WiFi and GPS.

If low noise is what you want, the 6D is very good. If you want superb focusing ability like you would need for action/sports then 5DMk3 or 7D are better.

Thanks for this. Yes from what I hear its not the best at anything but great all rounder, which will fit me perfect. I hear some bad things about the focusing, but I'm sure it will be better than my 600d and I've never had any major complaints about that.

There's nothing wrong with the focusing it's just that it has fewer focusing points than the 5dmk3. It has a very good sensor, the same as is in the 5DMk3 that is top class.

Read ken Rockwell's review http://kenrockwell.com/canon/6d.htm for details.

    They have different sensors.

I stand corrected. The 5dMkii has 22MP and the 6D 21MP but the 6D has slightly better dynamic range and a slightly better low noise performance.

Thanks guys, I just ordered one! Can't wait...

    You won't be disappointed!

I'm tempted to go that route too - where did you end up purchasing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,760 ✭✭✭Effects

To be honest, I thought the 6D would be better in low light than it actually is. I've shot with a 5DIII a few times but never at night to compare performance. I went from a 5DI to a 6D so the autofocus wasn't an issue but it is a lot better on the 5DIII.

I'm still a bit confused about the focusing, would anyone mind explaining it to me and why some people complain about it?

Basically the 6D has an 11 point focusing system while the 5D has 61. The 5D also has 41 cross type and the has 1 - the centre point. All it means is that for action shots the 5D has superior focusing ability.

Does it make a difference? I don't know as I usually only use the centre point for 11 or 61 makes little difference.

This extract from http://www.imaging-resource.com/cameras/canon/5d-mark-iii/vs/canon/6d/ might be of interest:-
Let's get another big difference out of the way: autofocus points. The 6D offers a measly 11, just one of which cross-type, versus 61 and 41 offered by the 5D Mark III. AF points are critical to autofocus tracking, so you can eliminate the 6D from consideration if you plan to do a lot of sports photography.

The 5D Mark III is also the better camera if you do a lot of video work. We found the 5D Mark III to be highly effective at limiting video moiré, which wasn't the case for the 6D. The 5D Mark III's headphone jack is also invaluable for shooting video.

Thanks, appreciate the help. So cross type are better for spot and fast moving stuff? I don't do much of that really - bar the odd time I would like to photograph motorbikes. From what I read you have one cross type in the middle which you have to make do with, I'm sure it will be fine. However I did read that the 6D is fantastic at focusing in low light - that is way more important to me I think.

People complain about 6D focus because there is only one cross type in the middle. Now this is ok for most people who are prepared to use middle focus point and use recompose technique.
However this is no good if you want your subject off the centre and you are using very shallow depth of field, like f1.8, f1.4. Recompose doesn’t work in this instance as even slight movement will result in blurred subject as focus field has shifted.
It really depends what and how you take your images.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,616 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

So what does the cross type do that the others don't? If you are shooting at f1.8 or f1.2, can't you just use one of the other surrounding focus points?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Fat_Fingers

To break it down to basics cross type locks and focuses faster and its more sensitive. This is important for moving subjects and low light.

Other focus points will work ok in good light. On moving subject it will work in good light. Don't expect to nail every shot but it will work most of the time . Longer it takes to lock the focus its more likely you will lose that moment. You already know this from your 600D. In not so ideal light/low light using other focus points you will experience dreaded "focus hunting" scenario where the camera focuses back and forth repeatedly without achieving focus lock.

    I want one too!!:)

Anyone know of anywhere doing deals on one in Ireland. From €1700 on Ebay, I know they are normally ok but I'm concerned about the warranty.

Certainly wouldn't be paying 1700 for one on ebay, some local shops have them for 1600

    I meant a kit with 24 - 105mm lens.

Guys I bought mine here: http://www.eglobalcentral.eu/canon-eos-6d-body-only-digital-slr-camera.html
I paid €1,147 with free delivery - arriving tomorrow.

What deal did you get with Cons?

My last camera came from simplyelectronics. It was delayed by a couple of weeks arriving which was ok but when the camera stopped communicating with the lens I sent it back on warranty. 5 months later I got it back!! And there was nothing I could do about it. Needless to say I won't do that again and from what I've read eglobal are very similar so be careful.

I'll PM you the deal, but basically I just asked them what they could do for me.

Yeah well I suppose this is true - but I cant ignore the massive savings. I've never had a problem with camera gear it's mostly fairly bullet proof.

I am looking at getting one myself, so I started looking at the prices over the past couple of months. 15th of May was the cheapest so far. Take into account also, there are coupons given out every so often. I don't check this every day though.

    29th April 2015 €1,212.99
    11th May 2015 €1,197.99
    15th May 2015 €1,147.99
    2nd June 2015 €1,173.99

Just got my 6D and 24-105mm F4L setup today. I got a Lee big stopper a couple of weeks ago and I also got the foundation kit today. Tomorrow I go to Greece for a week. To say I am excited is a bit of an understatement :P

That is very exciting!! Very jealous, sounds like a fantastic kit to get to grips with.

    Where did you purchase?!

Nice one. I have mine a few weeks now and loving it! Make sure to shoot raw. I'm super impressed with the quality - and when you use lightroom you can really make the photos pop with that wow factor
Where did you get the big stopper and how much?

Oh I only shoot raw, really looking forward to testing this. The OH doesn't know it arrived yet. We are meeting up in Greece as she lives in Germany. She will be quite happy as I need to find a new home for my Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 :P.

Big stopper I got from Amazon, I think it was 160 with postage. A bit on the steep side, but we couldn't find anywhere that would deliver to Ireland. I probably didn't try hard enough :P

I bought mine from TechnikDirekt about a year ago:

    http://www.technikdirekt.de/en/photo-filming/camera-and-lens/digital-slr-camera/642530/canon-eos-6d-body

Good price, if not the absolutely cheapest, and more importantly (for me) they were happy to ship ex-VAT once I provided my VAT number. Right now, they're about €150 cheaper than Amazon UK.

As for the 6D itself, I upgraded from a 550D and absolutely love it. It's only a little bigger than the 550D, but has a much more professional feel. I've used it for a bit of everything over the past 12 months - it's a great all-rounder.
