Endorsements

    Hi,

I am renewing my Learners Permit so that I can go for my Full License in a couple of months. I am just off the phone from NDLS and I asked them will my previous endorsement (the dirty stamp) be on my new one?

He said endorsements are now a thing of the past so that it won't be on it.

I then asked do I need to mention it to the insurance companies when I am looking for a quote?
    He said maybe I should.

I'm thinking if they don't ask I won't tell them. If they ask do I have any endorsements, I can simply say no because they no longer exist.

Do I have to tell the insurance company about my previous endorsements? It was 18 months ban for drink driving in 2010.

Is the law actually fair now, once you serve your time that's it. It's only fair because I have learned my lesson and now deserve a second chance just like anybody else.

Also, has anyone else been in my shoes? Have you been off the road for 18 months and got a quote? How did it go? Did you mention your endorsement that no longer exist?

    Cheers

The insurance companies will definitely ask about your driving history. What you are obliged to disclose to them depends on what their company policy is & how far back they want information on you. The only people who can tell you that are in the insurance companies themselves. Staff at the NDLS office can't tell you, as they don't work for insurance companies.

Insurance companies don't just ask about the state of your driving affairs now. They ask about it in the past. If the insurance companies ask you if you have had any endorsements/penalty points/accidents/claims within the last five years, then you would have to disclose your endorsement, if you are still within five years of getting it, or it being active. If they only ask for three years worth of back information, then you wouldn't have to disclose it.

However, if they ask you a definite question that has no time frame, such as "Have you ever received a driving ban?" or "Have you ever been convicted of driving while intoxicated?" then you have to answer the questions truthfully. Not doing so, would invalidate the policy if you ever have to make a claim. It wouldn't matter that you no longer have a physical stamp on your license. This kind of data is stored electronically now and, they would be able to find it out.

It is not a case of what is fair or unfair. It is all about risk assessment. What you did in the past affects what risk bracket you are in now. That affects companies willingness to insure you and what you will pay for your insurance.

Great, thank you for your input. I now understand that it is different for every insurance company.

Sorry, while you're here. My ban started Jan 10 2010. So it has been 5 years + 5 months since my ban started. Do you think it is ok to say 'none in the past 5 years'. It was 5+5months ago when I was banned. Or as you said...it has been active within the past 5 years..?

    Cheers

I've no idea. Ring them up and ask them how they measure the time frame. Some of them may do it calender year by calender year. Some of them take a year to be 12 months on from whenever the ban started. Some may measure it from when the ban ended. If your ban ended in July 2011, they may consider that to still be within the past 5 years. On matters like this, only the insurance companies themselves can tell you for sure. You wouldn't have to give any of your own personal information, or commit yourself to anything, if you just ring them up and ask for information on a matter of company policy.
