Best to do timing belt kit and water pump together. €320 or so would be average cost.

Lastjune water pump replced in 2011 1.2 tsi petrol golf.Paid about 80 but had vw Goodwill of 70%.But then in september timing chain needed replcing.Goodwill covered most of that bill{think full cost about 420 eu)Was told since that they really should be done at same time.Carwas out ofwarranty by 10 months but vw know it ig a common problem in petrol golfsand hence the goodwill payment

    Is it a difficult job?
    Could one tackle it themselves?

It's tricky but an interesting job all the same compared to just changing pads and discs or filters or whatever. Lots of VW forums out there with youtube videos diagrams etc. Have a look and see what you think. You'll generally on them have to remove an engine mount, alternator belt, various covers, the crank pulley and drain the coolant before you even start. You'll need plenty of tools, jacks, stands and locking pins. Not sure which 1.4 engine you have. I wouldn't do it to save money put it that way. If your interested in learning how to change them for something to do on a weekend go for it :).

Are water pumps like timing belts I that they should be replaced after a certain period before they break?

A water pump that's driven by the timing belt should be replaced along with the timing belt at its specified interval.

Start new thread with your specific details, e.g. car brand and model, location etc.
