New York despite the direct route - I see toys flying shortly!

No real surprise - when flying to the UK or anywhere Jet2 go we'll fly from NI, otherwise it's inevitably Dublin (including our recent trip to NYC - cost, preclearance etc made it a no brainer)...

Wouldn't the devaluation of the Euro versus the Sterling make for cheaper flights to those in Northern Ireland earning in Sterling, adding a further incentive to fly out of Dublin.

I imagine it's solely to do with price, I'm in North Donegal and would normally fly from the Belfast airports (Derry is getting worse and worse) but if I'm going long haul from a UK airport I'd always start from Dublin as it is an incredibly cheaper option. I even know a few people in England that would get a Ryanair flight to Dublin to start off a BA transatlantic journey through LGW or LHR from Dublin as there is so much difference in the price.

How would they route to make it cheaper ? Just a question not having a pop, honest question as I know of many in Scotland that would get a ferry to NI then drive to Rosslare for ferry to France rather than drive through England.

Maybe he matured a little and found out, as we all do shortly after leaving school, that the world doesn't in fact revolve around an individual!

As a matter of interest, how many people from ROI travel from NI? Not as much obviously, but it would be interesting to find out.

It will be an interesting figure alright. Most of them would be people who live in northern areas.

I have often considered it, but price would have to be worth while.

BFS/BHD don't have the kind of destinations that you're likely to have dear enough flights to for there to be big margins, and UK/some EU airlines discount ex-DUB fares to compete with EI TATL anyway so there'd be minimal reason for an DUB catchment passenger going north.

However, Donegal/Monaghan/Cavan would be a very different story, at all three airports. I know plenty from Donegal that use LDY to get to LON, there not having been a direct flight for about twenty years from CFN - and many living closer to it anyway.

And yes, the expected rattle-firing is happening in ANoThEr place...

BFS will have Las Vegas this summer, I'd imagine they will pull a few from the republic on that route. They also have a few other shorthaul sun routes that you can't get from DUB.

Of course DUB has more choice and is bound to get NI all the time, but I'd still say that NI airports get a few Irish pax.

There was someone posting on here not too long ago about how they (from Kildare) were flying BFS-KEF as the days/times suited over Wowair ex DUB.

Surprising that many travel ex DUB for UK destinations when, between BFS and BHD they seem to have good enough frequency and route choice domestically. All in the name of saving a few bob I suppose.

I've seen Tunisia from Belfast bookable as a standalone flight. I've not seen that in Dublin – only package deals.

I develop Superior Solitaire when I'm not procrastinating on boards.ie.

I have been to BFS a few times recently for work and i am amazed at how outdated the terminal facilities are... its genuinely like stepping back into 1983... so from even that point of view also its another reason that would influence peoples decision to head south maybe..

from a work perspective.. old clapped out GSE and not just our company. The offices are also dated.

in the terminal just seems like a lack of facilities overall.. shops, restaurants bars etc as in options. The decor is also old and dated in general, just not a nice airport. maybe we are just spoiled here in DUB

When living in Armagh I used Dublin over the Belfast routes a good few times for getting to GB, generally due to better prices and flight times (Ryanair) and tbh the difference between 80 minutes to the Red carpark at Dublin vs 55 to Aldergrove wasn't that great. South of Banbridge within the A1 corridor is realistically fair game for domestic travel for Dublin. For anything outside of domestic routes and package sunshine routes (in terms of decent European city travel) really Dublin is the only option.

There is chat of a few new routes starting from International, had heard rumours of Copenhagen and Berlin by Easyjet which would be great (if a bit random, along the lines of the Keflavik route). Copenhagen in particular though must be on the brink of being swamped, as far as I can recollect Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Norwegian and SAS all now go from Dub?

Danske Bank have a big operation in Belfast, perhaps they would block buy x seats to CPH.

This summer, Dublin Airport will have 10 airlines operating 328 flights per week to and from 11 destinations in the US and four destinations in Canada, which equates to an average of 47 daily flights to and from North America during the peak summer period. “Dublin Airport will be Europe’s sixth largest airport for transatlantic connectivity this summer, with only the hubs of Heathrow, Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris Charles De Gaulle, Madrid and Frankfurt providing more flights to the United States and Canada than Dublin,” Mr O’Kane said.
That's unreal. I knew DUB was doing well on TATL but didn't realise there are so many flights. Not so long ago T2 was being described as a white elephant. What would it take for DUB to move up a place on that list to fifth largest TATL airport in Europe I wonder?

Not much. Madrid is 5th with around 175 return flights per week.

After that, it's Amsterdam with around 100 more.

Forgive me for being confused, but at over 300, wouldn't it put DUB well ahead of Amsterdam and Madrid?

I believe the Dublin figure is both ways so needs to be halved for comparison to return pairs

AMS is the KL/DL joint venture hub so is quite significantly larger

Well in fairness this false statement originated with a certain Mr O'Leary, just goes to show what happens if you shout often and loudly enough....

This would place MAD at approx 350 weekly flights, AMS at 550 weekly flights,

As a County Down NI resident I generally use Belfast City for intra-UK flights ( it's quick and convenient ) and Dublin for international, particularly USA with pre-clearance.

Belfast International is a distant third-place, due to lack of destinations and inconvenient location. For matching destinations Dublin is seldom cheaper for me once I price-in a hotel room for the night before, but it's actually easier to reach by public transport.

They should have proofread it first. They have many "Tursted airlines" !

It is definitely dated. T2 in Dublin is a very good experience, comparable with many global airports, but T1 is still awful and, short of demolition and a rebuild, I can't see what either airport can do.
