I heard somewhere that Germans don't like using Paypal? Is this correct? Kind of puts my mind at ease if it it as bought something recently on ebay and he wanted bank transfer which I did straight away. This was on Monday. He should have the money in his account by now I guess? Payment status is at "Paid". Sent an email in broken German as well saying that the money has been transferred!

They don't like paypal indeed. Don't know why.

Bank transfer works. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. Up to 1 week, I'd say. :)

Oh really, that long? God I thought it might be only a couple of working days. Ok thanks for that.

Credit cards. Germans dislike credit cards greatly (or any other type of loans which credit cards fall under) which is why is why Paypal is not really that common (as you pay cash or by bank transfer instead and ensure you're not in debt).

Not if you transfer it as a SEPA payment (IBAN & SWIFT) as the EU legislation on that is they have to allocate it the same day or the day after (depending on the cut off time of the bank) rather than let them take how ever long they want (they also have to do it at a next to nothing cost).

SEPA transfers should only take a day or so, not a week: http://business.aib.ie/help/sepa-faq (see SEPA Credit Transfers section)

Yeah I used IBAN and (SWIFT BIC) for the transfer so hopefully all is ok. Thanks all for the info.

I have bought from numerous German ebay sellers via paypal, though most said they did not accept paypal on the auction.

I emailed them and asked if I paid 4% more on the item would they accept paypal and I think all the sellers did.

I figured they just did not want to lose out on this paypal fee (about 4% at the time) and so insisted on bank transfers or whatever. I figured the 4% extra I paid was probably better value than the bank transfer fees and associated hassle & time delays.

They were not particularly expensive items.

True. I was in Berlin last year and could not believe that the cash dispensers would offer you up to 1200 in cash. ! They also had a sliding door to a small room activated by your card - what a great idea. ?

That ATM would have given you a 500, or two, in that 1200 too. Try shifting one of those over here!

Slightly off from OT but if anyone could chime in with some info it would be greatly appreciated.
    • So transfer went through, seller acknowledged and dispatched item on 13/5 but no tracking number.
    • Estimated time came and went and so I contacted him about it. He said he made a fatal error with his dispatch management or some such and that I would receive a number the following day, otherwise I could report a scam, but I did receive one.
    • Entering it into the supplied https://www.deutschepost.de/sendung/simpleQuery.html
just resulted in a messaage "The item was posted on May 28" and nothing else.
So basically does anyone have any experience with the German postal site?
Does this sound normal at all?
Can't get any more information about sender or recipient on the postal site when entering tracking number so how am I to know its my parcel?

Is this a parcel or a letter.

If it's a letter you are on the right page there, if it's a parcel than you should use:

    http://nolp.dhl.de/nextt-online-public/

That page will give you full information, it's done by DHL Deutsche Post which uses a different tracking system.

The page is also available in English so it should help.

If he send it via DHL Deutsche Post as standard Packet (Paket) than it will take up to 10 working days to come to Ireland and will be delivered by AnPost. There should be further updates on the tracker soon starting with a parcel center near to the address of the sender and finaly you should see "is being transported to the country of the receiver" or similar, at which point it will take about 2 days before you can track it on the Anpost website.

    Hope that helps.
